A tremendous book

I enjoyed this book much more in my second reading, nearly twenty years after the initial publication. Full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, Witness Lee was the best Bible expositor I have ever read. In this book he identifies how God has sovereignly directed human affairs during the last 2,000 years, in order that He can accomplish His eternal purpose on this earth.

Discusses how God is sovereign in the world situation

In this book, Witness Lee talks about human history from the time of Adam and how various governments and world situations have been sovereignly arranged to carry out God's purpose on the earth. Everything from the Roman Empire to the establishment of the United States as a dominant force in the world were necessary for God to accomplish his ultimate purpose. For example, the Roman Empire, with its laws and organization and vast territory under its control, made it possible for the early apostles to travel easily from place to place preaching the Gospel.

Even though this book was written in 1982, and new world situations have arisen, I think you'll find that Witness Lee's analysis is still very relevant and insightful. For example, he has a section on the "triangle" of Russia, China, and the U.S., the only countries to have what is needed to be powerful today - a large territory, a big population, natural resources, and skills. He aptly describes China's future many years before it plays out by noting that their resources are rich, but underdeveloped, and proposes that for this reason China will need the United States for the money and technology to develop their iron, copper, silver, and coal mines. Actually, this is exactly what happened, so that now China is one of America's biggest competitors in marketing world goods. I highly recommend this book, and as another reviewer put it, once you start it you may find yourself reading it in one sitting.

Awesome book for culinary students

This book gives great information on preparing and handling food properly and of course the most important is how to store food before and after cooking. This book was a requirement for class but another book I purchase was not a requirement but I thought was extremely helpful was The Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam. This book had very similar questions to what's in class and on the exam and it help me pass with high grades. Thank you Dr. Leonardi and Ms. Heilman

Arend Lijphart is professor emeritus of political science at the University of California, San Diego, and the author or editor of more than twenty books, including Democracy in Plural Societies, published by Yale University Press. He lives in San Francisco.

Clear and well written

This is a book recommended by the University of London in their Political Science undergraduate course. I found it well written, clear and easy to go about. There is a conceptual difference between majoritarian and consensus types of democracies that are very distinctively spelled out. You go through the Westminster model, and related types, all the way through the consensual model whereby Switzerland democracy is fully studied. Cabinet decision making and the intricacies of the Central Banks are scrutinized under the two models proposed. The data presented is updated. I read it on my kindle, and underlined the most prominent parts.

Patterns of a Dated Democracy?

Arend Lijphart's "Patterns of Democracy" has become a standardized text within the comparative politics subfield, but I think the question needs to be asked "Given all the divergence in regime type that sprouted with the downfall of the Soviet Union, is the pure Westminster system still a viable starting point for analyzing the points of democratic governance. There's such a regime diversity these days that even regimes of a Westminster character have mutated into systems with two or three different characters. Its' still relevant information particularly when differentiating between presidential and prime ministerial type systems, cabinets, electoral systems etc. But I have to question whether the mixing of systemic elements has left Patterns of Democracy, a dated treatment of a system that has drastically changed.
