What Merian observed when breeding native species of butterfly triggered her curiosity, and spurred her to further investigation; the development from ovum, via larva and chrysalis, to adult butterfly was not fully understood in the 17th century. And not every pupa developed into a butterfly, which puzzled Merian for a long time. On seeing a collection of butterflies from Dutch Guiana, modern Surinam, she decided to study tropical flora and fauna, to discover whether the moths and butterflies she saw in collections shared the same life cycle as those she had bred: the egg and caterpillar stage. In 1699 she sailed for South America with daughter Dorothea, the first time any woman had ventured on a journey of exploration on this scale. Having evaluated and categorized her specimens, in 1705 she published her major work Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, in Dutch and Latin. She made 60 copperplate engravings to illustrate the stages of insect development, arranged around the cultivated and wild plants she had encountered on her travels. With its detailed text and imagery, the Metamorphosis is the first work on the natural history of Surinam. For 17th century Europeans it was an insight into an unknown world. TASCHEN s reprint of a hand-colored first edition copy includes the complete plates with a commentary by Katharina Schmidt-Loske. Merian accomplished a pioneering achievement of the modern age. This publication pays homage to her work and offers readers an opportunity to appreciate her sumptuous engravings.

A good introduction to category theory

I am the author's grad student so my rating may be biased. Nonetheless I would recommend the book as a comprehensive and well-written intro to category theory. There is a wealth of examples and exercises to motivate discussion and add depth to the material.

About the Author

David Myers received his psychology Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has spent his career at Hope College, Michigan, where he has taught dozens of introductory psychology sections. Hope College students have invited him to be their commencement speaker and voted him "outstanding professor."

His research and writings have been recognized by the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize, by a 2010 Honored Scientist award from the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences, by a 2010 Award for Service on Behalf of Personality and Social Psychology, by a 2013 Presidential Citation from APA Division 2, and by three dozen honorary doctorates.

With support from National Science Foundation grants, Myers' scientific articles have appeared in three dozen scientific periodicals, including Science, American Scientist, Psychological Science, and the American Psychologist. In addition to his scholarly writing and his textbooks for introductory and social psychology, he also digests psychological science for the general public. His writings have appeared in four dozen magazines, from Today's Education to Scientific American. He also has authored five general audience books, including The Pursuit of Happiness and Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

David Myers has chaired his city's Human Relations Commission, helped found a thriving assistance center for families in poverty, and spoken to hundreds of college and community groups. Drawing on his experience, he also has written articles and a book (A Quiet World) about hearing loss, and he is advocating a transformation in American assistive listening technology (see www.hearingloop.org). For his leadership, he received an American Academy of Audiology Presidential Award in 2011, and the Hearing Loss Association of America Walter T. Ridder Award in 2012.

He bikes to work year-round and plays daily pick-up basketball. David and Carol Myers have raised two sons and a daughter, and have one granddaughter to whom he dedicates the Third Edition of Psychology in Everyday Life.

Bob Mitchell is an author and speaker. He writes, presents and produces Christian DVDs on various subjects. He travels around the UK speaking in churches and fellowships and has also spoken in churches in the USA. Describes what is coming

Very well it describes what is coming with the Antichrist empire and how we are quickly being hurled toward as it.
He is correct that events are being manipulated by the elite to bring their God to the forefront.
We live in perilous times but our Lord Jesus is always in control.

Bad Exegesis and Eschatology

Wish I could have given it no stars. Some people want to write books purely on the sweat of someone else's brow. It's like cheating on a test. The sad truth is he's regurgitating bad, unsound exegesis and eschatology. Never in all the interaction the Israelites or Jews had with God did God ever return them to the promised land without their repentance. When have the Jews repented and turned to Christ? They haven't and they won't until Christ Jesus' second coming. Most are secular; some are satanic with their belief in the talmud and kaballah. Tel Aviv is the most homosexual friendly city in the world. The verses in Isaiah, Ezekiel and Hosea refer to the millennium NOT to 1947. Until people get the eschatology right, most will fall prey to the antichrist. Know to that the 70 Weeks Prophecy was completed when the Jews rejected Christianity 3 1/2 years after the death of Christ which is when the apostles went to the gentiles. In the entire new testament, there is no corroboration for a 7 year tribulation period only that there will be tribulation or great tribulation. There is no biblical authority anywhere in the Bible for splitting off the last week. These are deceptions propagated by the adversary and carried on by those that are blind. Read the Bible as if you have no preconceived ideas fostered by others. You will then see the truth.

Kindle formatting is horrible!!!! Content interesting.

The biggest problem with this book is that the formatting for the Kindle is horrible!!! There are whole sections that are a mix of pictures and some faint text. Skipped pages. How something like this get's through a review process is unbelievable!!! No quality control at all. The content of the book is very interesting although I wish I had tons of time to fact check everything that is written in a book. You have to hope the author is being factual.
