Crystal clear snapshot of 1950

This is a deep historical novel, autobiographical. A crystal clear snapshot of Hong Kong and China in 1949-50 (and the Korean War). The author is a person of great character, restraint, emotion and powers of observation. The copy I received was printed in 1950 or 1952, contains a dated introduction by the "Commissioner-General for the United Kingdom in South-East Asia"! This was apparently Han's second book. One can read about the life of this distinguished author on the net and see here on Amazon the many books she subsequently wrote. Apparently she is in her 90s now and lives in Europe. Han Suyin is a great treasure of our world. This book was a fine companion to Philip Snow's The Fall of Hong Kong, which I read a few months ago.

Timeless

This is a book from a different age when it was possible to develop a theme more slowly but it remains a beautifully constructed many-layered novel. On the surface it is a love story but there is a fascinating historical perspective that is of particular interest as China's importance grows. Beneath those aspects is the insight into class and race prejudice that is as relevant today as it was in Hong Kong in the fifties. The book is strongly autobiographical yet remains a novel. Any reader would identify with or recognise characters from their own world. I can recommend this book to readers with the time to enjoy beautiful descriptive writing and a gentle yet thoroughly absorbing story of great humanity.

Story of a colorful politician who cared about our country

I bought from Amazon the 1948 first edition of the book. It had a personal card of Mr. Houston, Jesse H. Jones, a friend of Garner and Roosevelt, and a note. It was a gift from Jones to a friend. I am so proud to have this book. It is a little beat up, a corner bent, the dust jacket discolored, torn and worn, but I would not trade it for a new one.
This book tells the story of an honest Texas politician who served his country. Can you imagine that? An honest politician! His story is a fascinating one., and written by his friend, Bascom Timmons. Garner had burned all his private papers.
Garner's wife, Ettie Rheiner Garner, was a remarkable woman and a book on her can be purchased from the El Progreso Memorial Library in Uvalde Texas for $35. The title is Ettie Rheiner Garner, Orphan of the Blanco. Her beautiful 1870s stone Rheiner family home still stands by the Sabinal River, just off Hiway 90 outside Sabinal on the way to Uvalde.The Garners are the good kind of people who built our country, that gave us good governemt, and gave us hope for the future. That hope has dimmed now with today's greedy politicians.

Zach and Kate are perfect for each other. Zach is just what Kate needs and visa versa. Both of them work in an industry that requires them to be sexually discreet so it's very difficult to meet the person of your dreams.
Kate is involved with the children's book industry so you can imagine trying to demonstrate prudence and circumspection when all you want to do is bend over a lover's knee and get spanked. Likewise Zach is a school principal and what he wants to act out sexually wouldn't sit well with PTA. Lonely during the holiday season, Zach begrudgingly volunteers his time to act out as Santa at the local mall.

A misunderstanding of sorts lands Kate literally on Zach's doorstep. Once Zach opens his front door, even though he is wearing the Santa suit, he's thinking Santa has just delivered him the present he had on his own naughty list. Immediately the pair connects and the chill outside soon turns to blazing hot when Kate gives in to her desires and submits to Zach.

I love that even though Brynn Paulin books are erotica there is always this amazing chemistry and story that goes into each one of her books. Zach and Kate were aware and attracted to each other prior to the doorstep encounter so the foundation was there for a budding romance. Both characters are slightly flawed with their own insecurities and as a couple they seems to melt away. However when Kate's insecurities get the best of her, Zach won't allow it and punishes her in the most sexy way *big smile*

A sexy santa

Of this series, i liked this book the least. not because its bad, it just that the other ones in the series are in my opinion hotter and better written and have more witty dialogue. Both characters are likeable and the set up premise is quite interesting, and i liked the fact that they were previously acquainted through work means. A big plus id that you don't really have to read the rest of this series to enjoy this book. If you get to this one in the series and aren't sure if you should go forward, i say a big yes....there is plenty of sexy dominant men and feisty women still to come.

In Yuletide Greetings, Zach and Kate are great together. They have met on previous occasions but have never taken advantage of their attraction. Kate is sent to Zach's door and from there the story explodes. They have great chemistry together which leads to lots of HOT HOT lovin! Oh Yeah!! There are plenty of sex scenes to keep everyone happy but also a wonderful story line with a happy ending.

Starred Review. They say mother knows best, but in the case of this classic cooking volume, first published 75 years ago, the adage might be more accurately "mother—and grandmother—know best." For while some previous editions of Joy have embraced passing fads and shunned the earlier versions' old-school charm, this time, the editors (led by Irma's grandson and Marion's son, Ethan) have stayed true to the spirit of the original. Fond of its forebear's quirky phrases ("There is nothing simple about these uncomplicated-looking fungi" or "a pig resembles a saint, in that he is more honored after death than during his lifetime"), the new narrative of Joy is one of, well, joy. Its recipes will prompt readers to bound into the kitchen; their range and depth is such that there really is something for everyone. Enchiladas, sushi, bagel chips, smoked brisket and corn dogs make their first appearance, while ice cream, nut butters and beef fondue return after some time away. The use of "we" throughout the text will reassure those skeptical of, say, preparing game (a section that, incidentally, has been expanded), and the overall feeling of the kitchen as a place of empowerment and enrichment makes this an essential work for all cooks. The concept of "essence"?that intrinsic quality without which an object is no longer itself?underlies the controversy surrounding the new Joy of Cooking. Original author Rombauer pioneered the "user-friendly" style, demystifying kitchen basics with reliable, unfussy recipes. Since Rombauer's death in 1962, subsequent editions by her daughter, Marion Becker, have expanded the scope while attempting to preserve the conversational tone. Now the sixth revision may indeed have a new and different essence; detractors attack the inclusion of exotic dishes as a betrayal of Rombauer's homespun intent and claim that her accessible voice is gone. Yet this revised American classic is essential. The recipes are still unfussy, e.g., a simple tapenade uses ordinary canned olives. No matter how far the new Joy has altered its initial purpose, it remains one of the most complete, all-purpose cookbooks available. Since a majority of the old recipes are gone, however, both past and current editions belong on the shelf.

Original Joy of Cooking

Great book with recipes long since forgotten. Easy to read and easy recipes to prepare. The author original humor still in the book which makes it so much better.

Best. Ever.

This is the book that taught me how to cook! My mom had given me a copy years ago when I was first on my own. I loved it, it is so informative. Not only does it include many recipes (yes, some of them are a bit dated, but I actually kind of like that about it.) but it includes so many tips, instructions, etc that are really pretty indispensable and that are not included in most cookbooks. Sure, most cookbooks include a chapter on equipment, terminology, and maybe even some instruction on heating sources and techniques, but this goes beyond that. This where I learned how to break down a whole chicken (cheaper than buying it already cut up), how to carve meats, how to pick out fruits and veggies, how to prevent dry turkey, how to cook different cuts of meat the best ways, and the green bean casserole recipe (NOT the mushroom soup fried onion dish most know by this name) is still my favorite way to prepare green beans.
The newer versions omit a lot of the information I found so helpful, with perhaps the exception of the anniversary edition (I have heard, anyway). I lost my copy years ago, so when I saw my favorite edition for sale on Amazon I was truly excited! The book is in very good edition, some light staining around the very edges of the book that may just be from aging paper. I am very impressed with the condition of the book.

MISSING RECIPES IN LATEST EDITION

I've used joy of cooking for so many years it's impossible to count. I recently needed to replace our 20 year-old copy as the binding has totally failed. To my distress the new copy is slightly smaller with a different less readable font. Most importantly the new joy of cooking is missing some recipes that we have previously used. This is forced us to cut and tear out the recipes from the old copy.

It had never occurred to me that later versions of classic cookbooks would remove recipes. My confidence has been shaken here wondering what other recipes that perhaps we use less often are now missing. I cannot give this latest version a high star review due to this fact.
