The contributors—anthropologists, political scientists, sociologists, and historians—explore how individuals and institutions in Latin American democracies, from the rural regions of Colombia and the Dominican Republic to the urban centers of Brazil and Mexico, use violence to impose and contest notions of order, rights, citizenship, and justice. They describe the lived realities of citizens and reveal the historical foundations of the violence that Latin America suffers today. nifty
By chicken head cut off
so the math is for, like, juniors (US/ugrad) who have had a smattering of mechanics/E&M/etc. it's lots of tiny tricks (ahem i mean techniques) and neat-o examples. i thouroughly enjoy it. each section is some cool useful technique applied to a fairly original problem like eggs or bombs or underwater cables.

Advanced, interesting, not always easy to follow...

Oliver Heaviside of operational calculus (i.e. Laplace transform) fame once said "Even Cambridge mathematicians deserve justice." However, the author of this Cambridge Press book is actually from Oxford, and so I did not bump up my rating of 3 stars. However, this rating may also be unjust. There are many very interesting examples from a wide range of subject areas, but unless you are studying that subject area, I think it will be hard for most to follow along. I would absolutely rate this book 5 stars if there was a substantial "hints" section in the back or a little more exposition in the text that would enable those with a less broad background to follow along more easily. When the author says in the preface he assumes you have a background in vector calculus, partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, linear algebra, etc., pay attention, he means it. The book is good for advanced students who want to get a taste of areas often not covered in undergraduate engineering coursework (e.g. Charpit's method for solving first order nonlinear PDEs, Buckingham-Pi theorem of dimensional analysis, "generalized" functions, asymptotics, perturbation theory, etc.). I think the order of presentation is questionable at times. As one example, in problem 2 of section 2.5, after giving the formula for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor, the author asks us to estimate the electrical capacitance of an elephant by dimensional analysis. I like this as an unusual example, but I am not sure how the parallel plate capacitor formula helps. After another paragraph about how much charge a human body can store (still part of problem 2.5), he gives an outline of the derivation of a capacitance of an isolated sphere, which I know can be used to give an upper bound (if the sphere encloses the elephant) for both the above examples, but the author never points this out, leaving it just hanging there. He then continues on with an RC circuit example (while still in problem 2.5!!). Because the spherical capacitance formula comes well after the elephant question, and looks like it is leading into the next part of the question (which rambles on endlessly), I am torn between applauding the author for including an interesting example that makes one think about how to calculate a useful estimate when the elephant shape is too complex to handle exactly and complaining that he can give a few more hints so that someone not that familiar with electrostatics can follow the problem more easily.

Additionally, could self-authenticating ministries, like those of martyrs and confessors who had suffered for the faith, supersede this order? Finally, did the Church need, and in what form, a universal bishop who could guarantee the integrity of the network of bishops? St Cyprian wrestled with these questions in his letters and treatises, selected and translated in these companion volumes. Each volume contains an introduction to the two principal controversies that spurred St Cyprian to write his defense on church unity: first, the readmission to the Eucharist of those Christians who had lapsed or fallen in the persecution under Emperor Decius; and second, the sacramental validity of baptism in heretical and schismatic communities.

A Little Gem

Allen Brent does a wonderful job of presenting this volume on St. Cyprian's comments on the Church. Cyprian is important because he gives us one of the earliest glimpses into the organization of the church as he strives to respond to the predominantly pagan culture in which he lived and ministered. Cyprian provides a model of how contemporary pastors/theologians/bishops could interact with their cultures. It is important to note that at this early stage, the Church was still very "charismatic"; this is seen early in the treatise "To Donatus". Brent does well also to note that Cyprian's view of the episcopate was influenced more by the setting of the Roman imperium of his city than by the Scriptures, from which Cyprian was trying to argue.

On a further note, "The Popular Patristics Series" is an inexpensive medium into the writings of the early Church Fathers

Cyprian helps the church navigate through troubled waters

Cyprian was a leader in the church in the aftermath of a great wave of persecution. Many Christians had denied Jesus in order to escape martyrdom. Now that the persecution had passed, the church had to decide what to do with these "lapsed." Should they be welcomed back in right away? Should they be forever shut out of the church as traitors to the faith? Do you take a stand for grace and forgiveness, or for holiness and truth?

This book collects four treatises by Cyprian as he tries to lead the church through these contentious issues. The first two are written to the outside world, and the last two deal specifically with issues related to the lapsed.
"To Donatus" - appeals to pagans that they should convert to Christianity in order to escape the corruption of the present age
"To Demetrian" - defends Christianity from accusations, saying that it's actually pagan idolatry responsible for the sad state of the world
"The Fallen" - answers the question of how the lapsed should be readmitted to the church
"The Unity of the Catholic Church" - rallies other church leaders together, appealing for the church to have one united response instead of the division it currently faced.

I thoroughly enjoyed this edition of Cyprian's writings. It was my first time reading this author, and I plan on spending much more time with his works. And the Popular Patristics series rarely disappoints.

And to make the new book even better for mainframe training, we added two chapters to the IBM Environment section.

If you write COBOL programs (or want to), you need this book

Structured COBOL is a brand new addition to the excellent catalog of mainframe computer programming books published by Mike Murach and Associates. If you are programming on the IBM mainframe platform, or intend to be, this is a title you should have on your desk. Although beginning programmers are included in the target audience, the real value of this material will be as a reference for on-the-job programmers.
At more than 760 pages, it covers everything you would need to research. Information is presented in an innovative format where each page of narrative is paired with a facing page containing a concise statement of COBOL syntax, suggested guidelines for the use of the COBOL feature, and one or more practical examples of the feature in code.
If you are a beginning programmer, the coverage of structured design, coding, and testing methodology is the best I have ever seen. Used as a text to learn COBOL, the language syntax is designed to be generic enough to work under any COBOL compiler. The chapters of the first section of the book are intended to be read in sequence as the information they provide each builds on the prior chapter. You will be writing COBOL code beginning in chapter 2. The remaining sections cover advanced, special-purpose features and techniques and may be read in the order that best suits the reader.
Although the COBOL coding is generic enough to be useful on any platform and compiler, the ultimate goal of the book is aimed at the IBM mainframe environment. The last section of the text covers such IBM specific topics as using ISPF and SDSF to edit, compile, and debug a COBOL program. It also includes sections on designing COBOL programs to run under CICS and to access DB2 databases.
As with all Murach books, the focus of Structured COBOL is getting real work done in the real world. All of the example code in the book can be applied directly to real world situations: dealing with pre-2000 dates in legacy programs, updating sequential files using matching record techniques, and creating and updating indexed datasets with primary only or primary plus alternate record keys. There is even a section describing how to deal with maintenance on programs written prior to the advent of structured design methods.

Murach's Structured COBOL

I've just browsed this book, which was delivered just 5 minutes ago, but I was very disapointed. Most examples are still in the old fashion COBOL way from the 70's and are not taking advantage of "Mixed Case", "Scope Terminators"(not even mentioned in the index), which makes a COBOL program structured. Use of the "full stop (.)" should be forbidden, where it's not needed, and that's only at the end of a paragraph. Using "MOVE 'Y' TO EOF_SWITCH" instead of "Set EOF to True" even more disqualifies this book as a "structured programming" book, which should be more up-to-date in thinking of how to use Cobol. The examples on OO-Cobol seem to be ok, maybe written by another author?
This book is of course a good reference for Cobol programmers, but I was expecting a more "modern" aproach to using the Cobol language and have examples "extremly" structured and in every minute take advantage of possibilities available in the language. Younger programmers are used to other structured languages, e.g Visual Basic and Java, and should be informed that the Cobol language is not a "left over from the 60's" but is is real structured programming language. Old programs have to be rewritten or Cobol will not survive. My expectation was that Murach would help us, but this is not really the case!

Mike Murach, Anne Prince, and Raul Menendez collaborate to cover all aspects from getting started and special-purpose features to file handling and the use of COBOL for specific platforms. Readers will learn how to code, compile, test, and debug interactive programs; the best techniques for designing and coding structured programs; the specifics necessary for developing programs for IBM mainframes; fourteen full programs and dozens of coding examples to enable the coding of the reader's own programs; and exercises at the end of each chapter to provide a maximum amount of applied practice in a minimum of time on your own personal computer. The informative, "user friendly" text is accompanied by a CD-ROM. Murach's Structured COBOL is very highly recommended for the novice approaching COBOL for the first time, and has much of value for even the seasoned, experienced COBOL user.
