Paul D. Sonkin�(New York, NY) is a portfolio manager at GAMCO Investors / Gabelli Funds. He is co-Portfolio Manager of the TETON Westwood Mighty Mites Fund, a value fund which primarily invests in micro-cap equity securities. Sonkin has over 20 years of experience researching small, micro and nanocap companies. Prior to analyzing stubs, spin-offs and micro-cap companies for GAMCO, Mr. Sonkin was for 14 years the portfolio manager of The Hummingbird Value Fund and the Tarsier Nanocap Value Fund. �He holds an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in Economics from Adelphi University. Since 1996, Sonkin has been an adjunct professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Business, where he has taught courses on security analysis and value investing. It is important to note that using the similarity laws of fluid dynamics we have obtained the “tangent law of projectile refraction,” which represents a progress with respect to “Newton–Snell’s law” on projectile refraction. For better understanding of the information presented in the book, the reader should refer to my three preceding books on exterior ballistics, already published by Xlibris, although most of the material is self-contained and clear enough to be accessed and assimilated by a wide range of readers. The system of units used in the book is the International System (SI). For readers that are unfamiliar with the SI system it is not difficult to become accustomed and use the materials presented in the book to benefit from the simple illustrations, exercises, and PC programs that, at the same time, give answers to many problems encountered in practice. My studies and writing work in exterior ballistics intend to find new and simple mathematical models and methods to predict the elements of the projectile trajectory. George Klimi (Gjergj Klimi), PhD, is associate professor of Mathematics at NYC College of Technology and adjunct faculty at Pace University (New York). George is the author of three books on exterior ballistics: Exterior Ballistics with Applications (2008), Exterior Ballistics of Small Arms (2009), Exterior Ballistics: A New Approach (2010), published by Xlibris. The third edition of Exterior Ballistics with Applications, Xlibris, was published in December 2011. George Klimi, from 1970 until 1993, has been professor of physics and mathematics, and chair of the physics department at the Military Academy of Tirana, Albania. In the nineties George used to work at the Committee of Science and Technology and at the Ministry of Higher Education and Research in Albania as Director of Tempus Office, responsible for the implementation of the European Community Programs to restructure higher education. He was awarded the Gold Medal of Eagle by the president of the Republic of Albania for his contribution in the democratic movement against dictatorship and for restructuring higher education in Albania.

Does what it says; says what it does

On the front cover of this book is written "Object-oriented development with ActionScript 2.0." That's a good summary of what this book covers. The focus is clearly on ActionScript, with an emphasis on building classes and using objects.

The book provides a good, but brisk, introduction to object-oriented programming (OOP). If you're new to OOP, you may need to wallow for a while in the first few chapters. That being said, I do think it's possible (with patience, determination, and a commitment to look over the code samples carefully) to use this book as the basis for your first exposure to OOP. Some of the concepts may not "click" until you work through the examples in later chapters.

If you have experience in other OOP languages, this is an excellent book to learn the peculiar ways of object oriented programming in ActionScript 2.0. The book is easy to read and flows well. Although I will definitely value this book as a general ActionScript reference, I enjoyed it as a cover-to-cover read -- a significant accomplishment considering the rather dry subject matter! The book is sufficiently thorough, but doesn't include much fluff ("just right" -- which is typical for O'Reilly books, in my opinion).

Theoretically intense

Ok, you've read a beginner to intermediate book such as flash bible, unleashed etc. you've read one or more dedicated books on actionscript such as actionscript bible, cook book or flash hacks. You also practiced and built some projects using the knowledge acquainted from previous books. You can cope with the mentality of books on languages such as C++ or Java. You are ready and in need to get into the core of the theory of object oriented programming with actionscript. Only then this book is for you. Do not make a mistake by jumping into this book right away. This book is dry, theory intensive and not to the liking of the most graphically based mentality.

It's like being back in math class... (yawn)

Though you'll be bleary-eyed and exhausted at the conclusion of each lengthy and dense chapter, the book is worth adding to your ActionScripting Library (right next to ActionScripting in Flash MX by Philip Kerman, which is the only ActionScript book I'd give 5 stars)
The only real shortcomings here (other than the lack of data connectivity topics, as another reviewer noted) are the author's occasional forrays into how ActionScript compares to Java (not learning Java so I don't care, thank you), and the occasionally convoluted examples (you can tell someone used to work at Macromedia when they weave four different concepts into one example, obfuscating the topic at hand).

Nonetheless, the author does do a good job dividing the content onto fundamental OOP concepts, and includes a usefule appendix covering methods and events of all the classes (noting the errors in Macromedia's own documentation).

For someone without any programming experience outside of ActionScripting (like myself), this book is challenging to plod through, but doable. But learning ActionScripting is like learning to practice law (instead of learning every statute on the books, lawyers focus on legal prcedents, and research their own issues). That's what this book is like: a primer on advanced ActionScript "precedents". After reading it, you'll have a better general understanding of how solutions can be implemented, but you'll still need to visit the Flash Developer Center and the HELP panel to make applications that really work.

Across the Board

When a digital camera takes a picture it saves the information in a digital file. This file may be processed by the camera for easier viewing or use. RAW is the name of the file format for unprocessed data. This RAW file is capable of more manipulation when transferred to a computer than a processed picture, like one in the JPG format. This allows a photographer to make the file look more like his or her vision.

This book offers guidance on using the raw format, starting with set up of the camera for saving a picture in RAW, through processing, to archiving the image. There are several books in print that explain how to use the popular Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) software, which is part of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, for processing RAW files. But ACR is not the only software available for processing RAW files, even if it is the most prominent. Unlike other books, this volume takes a step back and looks at the range of software available for RAW processing including independent software like Capture One, Raw Shooter and Bibble, and camera manufacturers' software like Nikon Capture. The authors also consider related software, like Adobe Bridge and Extensis Portfolio, as well as some new software that takes a different approach to handling RAW files, like Apple's Aperture and Adobe's Lightroom.

Unfortunately, this effort to take the long view has its problems. The authors look at different software packages for RAW processing, and point out the most important features of each, However there is not enough depth to allow readers to make a decision as to which package is best for them. If it is impossible to provide that much information in a book of this length, I would have liked to see the authors provide their comparative conclusions as to which software was most appropriate for photographers with different goals and bents.

The same problem exists with regard to other aspects of the long view. For example the author's note that both Extensis Portfolio and Adobe Bridge have the capability of searching archived files for keywords. But they don't make any comparison that shows the advantages and disadvantages of the two. I conducted an experiment to search one thousand files for a single keyword. With Portfolio the search took less than a second. The same search with Bridge took more than five minutes. Yet, if I were working in Bridge with a small file set, it would be more convenient to search keywords with Bridge than to start Portfolio. While I don't need to see this exact comparison, I would have liked to see a more detailed comparison than was provided.

At the other end of the scale, the authors give far more detailed instruction on the use of ACR than on any other converter. Unfortunately, it's just not quite deep enough. They show you how to manipulate the controls in ACR but leave out many of the fine points. For example, most experts recommend that you not sharpen your pictures in ACR. The authors also tell you this, although they do tell you how to adjust the sharpening slider. But it's easier to use the other controls if the picture is sharpened. ACR has a facility that allows you to view your file as sharpened, without actually applying sharpening. The authors don't mention this.

If you want to learn how to use ACR, for the beginner I recommend Mikkel Aaland's "Photoshop CS2 Raw" and for the more experienced user, Rob Sheppard's "Adobe Camera Raw for Digital Photographers Only". But if you want a broad overview of the entire RAW process, with an introduction to all aspects, including software, I haven't found a book comparable to this.

Great for a beginner

I am not an expert, but as someone trying to improve my skills with Raw, this book definately covers the waterfront. I am very pleased. It has a very nice mix of text pictures and examples. Very easy to follow, and offers a wide choice of options for editors, setting up a workflow and covering the subject.

Good coverage

I am still at the beginning of the book but initial impression is as follows:
Pro: quality print & illustrations, good explanations, easy read, well laid-out, good software coverage
Con:At times more depth would be good i.e. more technical detail for people really interested. Current level perfect for most people.
Key complaint - American English - for example: gonna,yer chance, et cetera - why not use proper English.

Judith Weston's brilliance is to recognize that directors, actors, writers, and technicians are involved in a process that is at essence a collaboration. In order for them to have the best shot at creating something true and meaningful, they must share a language and a method of exchange that fosters creative cooperation. Weston rightly sees the director as the central figure in inspiring the energy of a production's harmony. She advises the prospective director on every aspect of a stage or film production, showing how the director can draw the best performances possible from actors.

Though a bit Touchy-Feely

Though I felt that this book was a bit too touchy-feely for my own taste, it did have a lot of valuable insights into the actors mind and how to work with them in a collaborative sense. If you are a director that does not believe in running with the actors own take on a character, then this book would be painful for you to try to read. Nevertheless, if you are looking to have a truly collaborative experience (not all of us are), the advice contained within is very solid.
Weston breaks the process of working with actors down to how to give concise words to help get a performance. She further spends time developing adjustment techniques. I think this book is particularly strong in its discussions on script breakdown, and having multiple approaches to playing a scene. It gives some helpful advice on casting as well, and really challenges a director to cast the best person in a role as opposed to the one that they feel "nailed the part" based on ones preconceived notions.
The biggest weakness in this book is that really favors the actor over the director at times, and leaves me asking (as a director) why would I want to have this relationship. I do not believe, as Weston proports, that a director should always allow the actor to find the voice of his or her character without explicit direction. Nevertheless, it certainly challenged my own technique, and I am a better filmmaker from having read it.

Director Beware

A practical, technique oriented introduction to directing actors. It's really from an actor's perspective, and has a very condescending attitude toward directors. But this is useful. The anecdotes are really enjoyable. Not a substitute for acting and directing experience, just one set of possible tools to try to put into practice. Harold Clurman's "On Directing" is of the same aesthetic perspective, but at the same time broader and more succinct, and more sympathetic to directors.

The Only Book on Directing I Have Ever Loved

Completely unpretentious. Thoroughly knowledgeable and confident. Allows you to discover the concepts yourself, rather than spouting them at you. And yet...also completely able to be referenced.
In other words... the best book on directing I've ever read. The only I will ever recommend. To actors and directors alike.
I hate to call it "hype," but after reading the book feverously (which, for a book on directing, is almost unheard of), it is safe to believe it here. All the endorsements on the back cover from people working "in the industry" no longer ring of marketing salesmanship, but of complete honesty. There are few things in this world I would endorse, given the chance. This is one of them.
I don't want to say it "changes you." But I will say I had more thoughts and ideas OF MY OWN while reading this book that ever before. The reason? It's like any craft: if you sit down to make something, you usually don't really know what to make specifically until you get to know your tools. Then--once you know what you can be done, what things are available to you to use, the ideas of what you can do with these tools start flowing.
I'd like to thank Ms. Weston for introducing me to some of the tools. Actually, I have thanked her. She called me back. I'm still floored by that.
