With all the new ways available to us to see the workings of the human brain, watching a child grow and blossom is still an experience of awe for me. I've worked as a child psychiatrist for the last 40 years. During that time, I've taught the theory and practice of child psychology and psychiatry to thousands of undergraduates and medical students. Standing before judges, I've helped courts determine the "best interests of the child" in cases where the competency of a child's parent(s) was in doubt. I've also counseled parents attempting to fulfill their responsibilities to guide and nurture their children against great odds. Perhaps most meaningfully, I've listened to children and adolescents as they struggled to overcome mental disorders or disabilities or just the "normal" challenges of growing up.

From all these experiences, I appreciate that children come into this world with instincts to thrive intellectually, emotionally, and morally. But as the world around them goes faster and life becomes more complex, a child needs more support and guidance. In the 22 chapters contained in this book, my co-author Victoria Costello and I have �provided the essential building blocks of knowledge needed by students of psychology, parents, teachers, and anyone else who wants to help children grow and learn.

Goodbye Dull, Dry Textbook; Hello Insightful Read

If you're afraid of dull, tedious textbooks, have no fear of reading The Complete Idiot's Guide to Child and Adolescent Psychology. I was thrilled to find a comprehensive, well-researched and highly readable introduction to the history, current research findings and up-to-date trends in child psychology.

I especially appreciate how co-authors Jack C. Westman M.D., M.S. and Victoria Costello have organized the book in such a way that makes for very accessible and reader-friendly use. Beginning with Discovering Childhood followed by Foundations of Personality, this textbook flows naturally into A Child Is Part of a Family before addressing The Big Picture (outlining emotional, moral and cognitive development). If interested in specifics you can then focus more indepth on Ages and Stages. Finally, they highlight important challenges in the section Issues in Child Psychology, and how to deal with them in Therapeutic Approaches.

Key definitions are described in simple yet effective terms; the co-authors also offer specially highlighted sections for insights and complications surrounding important developments. Another great feature is 'Least You Should Know' - succinct snippets of key chapter points, ideal for the busiest of readers. How I wish such a welcoming textbook were available all those years ago when I was in college!

The Complete Idiots Guide to Child and Adolescent Psychology is a comprehensive handbook for anyone interested in understanding childhood psychology, from unborn babies in the womb to adolescents about to embark on adulthood. The theory and proposed application of the information is seamlessly integrated by definitions, insights and field study material that guides the reader into in-depth thought on the information presented.

Parents who need a quick reference or people new to the study of childhood psychology will find the table of contents easy to navigate and the appendices filled with relevant resources for those who want to get additional information. Students will find it straight forward when searching for specific information and return to this book as a great reference tool for this reason. Jack C. Wesman and Victoria Costello created a great handbook that can be easily integrated into any post secondary course study on childhood psychology. Hands down this is a great learning tool!

Every parent and student of childhood psychology should have a copy of The Complete Idiots Guide to Child and Adolescent Psychology in their personal library as a handy and relevant reference companion. For those who don't already have a copy, this book would make an excellent gift that would keep on giving through the years!

Putting meaningless, say-nothing politician style speech to constructive use

This book is the inverse of The Structure of Magic. That book was about how to be relentlessly specific, which functions as a BS filter. For example, "my wife doesn't love me anymore" requires mind-reading, so you could ask "how do you know she doesn't love you anymore?". That question doesn't call the original statement into question, but asks for the evidence for the claim, based in sensory experience. Usually the answer is something like "she doesn't look at me in some particular way that I never told her I liked", which gives you something to work with.

As for THIS book, this is the opposite--essentially how to BS for constructive purposes. You can use it to catch on to a politician's game, or--should your own thinking begin to sound a bit too much like what this book shows you how to do--to catch your OWN BS and knock it off. This book is about how a brilliant hypnotist talked, which is actually pretty simple in theory. He would mention things to shift your attention. Like this: did you notice just how much of your weight is going into your chair? You probably didn't before, now you do. You do that with enough things and in a certain way, you have people in a different state of mind. If you're good (and trying to help) you can talk them into not actively thinking/feeling bad about their problems, and have them in a state of mind where they can see things differently.

Then you can say things that don't have any actual meaning to help them. Like this: there was an experience some time in your past, where you learned a very valuable lesson, and your subconscious knows the one, and I want you revisit that experience as you remember all you have learned since, because there is something very, very important that you have yet to learn from that experience. I don't know if your subconscious will prefer to tell you about it in consciousness, or to keep it to itself as a secret, but it will help you in the upcoming weeks and months as you go about your daily life in a new way you didn't know was possible.

See? No meaning whatsoever, but it can still be life changing, because--and this is what this book shows you--it takes advantage of the fact that we all need things to make sense, so that if nothing is really being said, we'll invent the meaning ourselves. By saying meaningless things that suggest categories of having a better life, people rummage through their brains and find wonderful things pretty easily. It's a particularly respectful way of doing therapy, because you can help the person without imposing your own "stuff" on them. They just go in and find whatever they need themselves.

Amazing book that presents a concise and interesting argument, approaching humanitarian intervention as "all interventions by armed forces either under the command of or formally legitimized by the UN are by definition humanitarian intervention". A must read for those interested in humanitarian intervention, the role of the UN, peacekeeping, IR theory, and Westphalian/post-Westphalian comparisons.

About the Author

Xu Yuanchong is a scholar and translator of ancient Chinese poetry into French and English. Since 1983 he has been a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at Peking University. In 2010 he won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Translators Association of China. In 2014 he became the first Chinese recipient of the Aurora Borealis Prize at the World Congress of the International Federation of Translations.

Xu did a fine job in translating the meaning of these poems or ...

This tome by Xu is a translation of the some of the most famous poems and lyrics written by poets through various Chinese dynasties. Xu did a fine job in translating the meaning of these poems or lyrics, but in the translation a lot of the subtle meaning is lost because the English language is not suitable for such task, just as a science fiction or fantasies written in English originally lost quite a bit of the messages that was trying to be conveyed while being translated into Chinese. If you want to read poems, read them in their original language.

This is the third book in the Trident Series and while it is a stand-alone novel it should be read in order as it does give away things that occurred in previous books.

Ben "Boomer" Michaelson is not the settling down type. When he was in high school he thought he found the girl of his dreams but her and her family died in a car crash and part of Boomer has never gotten over her. When he receives a request to have a meeting with Kate Zimmerman at Trident he is baffled to who that is.

Kate Zimmerman, aka Katerina Maier, never knew the trouble her dad was in when their car was forced off the road and her life changed forever. When she knows someone is after her she goes to the only person she believes can help her - Ben Michaelson.

Ben vows to try and figure out who is after Kat and why. His heart still belongs to her but he has changed so much since she has been gone and is not sure if Kat will like the new him. When the Russians strike will Kat be able to forgive herself for the events or will she push everyone away and run?

This has been my favorite story so far! I love the back story on these two and how they are going about trying to figure out why the Russians are after Kat. I also loved that the story was really realistic with the sex and not just jumping into the BDSM.

I really liked Boomer in the previous books and this one definitely shows us how much he truly cares about Kat and the strong relationship he has with his team and with his parents. Although he is strong we definitely get to see a vulnerable side, especially towards the end.

Kat is so strong with everything she has been through and I can't imagine what she had to go through only to discover that it wasn't over. She is vulnerable and I can understand her reluctance to get involved with many people with not really knowing who to trust. I completely get her actions at the end and I can't say that I wouldn't do the same thing.

Carter is my hero and I really need the author to write a book on him!! His character has been growing on me since the very first book and now I believe he could be one of my favorites. I love his attitude, swagger and knack for being at the right place at the right time. I can't wait to read about the woman who is able to tame him down!

This series is very well developed and I love the continuation of the story so that we are never leaving a character behind and are really getting to know them! I can't wait to read the next one!

O.M.G!! It's the first thought that comes to my mind for typing this review. How does Samantha Cole do it?! What an amazing author. I started reading this series and with this being book #3, I just can't believe Ms. Cole can still have me hooked! From the beginning to the end there's always something going on. Never a dull moment. This book has a great story-line with details, sexy men, romance and steamy-hot sex scenes. Samantha Cole also writes with emotion. I smile , make a sad face, and sometimes I just want to jump right into my kindle and have fun too ;)

Waiting for Him Trident Security book 3 is a smoking hot read. The characters from the previous books are in this one as well which I like how the story continues. This is about Ben and Kat. The story starts with Ben's world falling apart when his best friend and the woman he loved died in a car accident. Well 12 years went by and Kat needed the help of the Trident men. When Ben sees Kat standing there, he faints. So Ben and his teammates help he out. Ben realizes that he loves Kat with all his heart and he would do anything including stop his lifestyle, but he saw her reading Kristen's book and she had some interest in the BDSM lifestyle. So one day he showed her The Convent. Ben calls Kat- Kitten. Then the story continues and the plot gets better so your going to have to one-click this book to find out as I don't want to spoil it.

"Kitten, there is nothing about you I would change. Your eyes are so expressive, sometimes I can't stop looking at them, especially when you laugh."

"I can't help it, Kitten. You say the funniest things. You've always been able to make me laugh." She pinched his side and he grabbed her writs to stop her. "Okay, Okay. I'm not laughing at you. But why bowling?" Her head went back to rest on his strong upper body."Because we always had the best times when we were bowling. You,me, and Alex."

"She's my life. I don't care if I have to get on my knees and beg, or tie her a** up and kidnap her, but damn it, I'm not letting her get away this time. I love her and I've got to get her back."

"Kitten, I love you with all my heart. You're my sunshine, my moonlight, my past, and my future. My life was beautiful with you in it the first time, and it's beautiful again, now that you're back in my arms. I had a dream last night about Alex. I know it sounds weird, but he gave me his blessing and made me promise to take care of you forever. Whether real or imagined, it's a promise I intend to keep. Marry me, sweetheart. Grow old with me and make the rest of my life beautiful too."

After having the fantastic opportunity to read book 1 in the Trident Security series, I've jumped at and loved the following 2. Each book is a stand alone and introduces us to a different member or this extremely hot group of men, affectionately known as the sexy six pack. So this time it is Benjamin, Ben, Boomer, Benny Michaelson story. I have to admit after following Devon and Ian, Ben had some serious shoes to fill and I have to say, he exceeded my expectations gaining him and Waiting for Him a very well deserved 5 stars.

Ben had his world shattered 12 years ago, when his best friend Alex, and his family were all killed in a horrible car accident. Not only did he lose his best friend but Alex's little sister, whom had stolen Ben's heart only hours earlier. Katerina Maier had all but given herself to Ben, but with his impending Armed forces training, he asks her to wait for him. 32 hours later everything changed.

Now Ben is a team member of Trident Security, and former Navy Seal he uses his skills for all sorts of security jobs. Along with Trident, he is a Dom at "The Covenant" a very private club in the confines of the compound. While on the job he is set up for a meeting with a Kate Zimmerman, thinking she is a past sexual conquest, Ian sits in on his meeting with the strange woman to find out what she really wants from Ben. Ben never imagined walking into the room and seeing a ghost.... It litterally knocks him out.

Katerina (Kat) Maier, was removed from civilization when her mother and brother were killed in a car accident. Her father and herself were saved and placed into witness protection. She lost her real love that day, but she had never forgotten Benny, her Benny. Now 12 yrs on, her father has passed away for real this time, and she is in danger once again. Not knowing who to turn to, she goes to the one man she can trust, Benjamin Michaelson. Never expecting Ben's response to her returning from the dead, she certainly didn't expect his anger towards her. It is only a matter of time before their old feelings return, but Ben has changed so much in 12 years, and not into the man that Kat is expecting.

Knowing Ben will have to let Kat go again after her life is no longer in danger, he uses all of his power to stay away from her, but she is so sexy now, and it is only a matter of time before they give into their attraction, but not before Ben explains who he really is now. Very quickly a quickie is not going to cut it, real feelings return for both Ben and Kat and they declare their love for each other.

But this will only work if Ben and his Trident team along with "holy crap hotness" Carter & any hi flying FBI team members they must find who wants Kat dead and why. This begins the start of a jigsaw puzzle of Kat's 2 lives, and her father's greed or stupidity, jury is still out on that one. Discovering it is a drug cartel tracking her down to get what her father stole from them, when it is clear, they will stop at nothing to get what they want and removing Kat permanently is not a problem either. Ben and his team must take everything on to save this woman, Ben's woman.

This is where I really enjoy Samantha Cole's writing, she has the power of extremely hot male leads, headstrong female's and some hot damn melt your panties sex.. but she has the talent of creating a who dunnit with just enough mystery to keep you page turning.

While contending with returning to her former life and showing up at family's homes as the ghost they never expected, can Ben and the Trident team, save her and remove the threat permanently and can Ben and Kat return to lovers and get that happy ever after that was taken away so abruptly years before?

This was beyond all my expectations, I'm now a huge Samantha Cole and Trident Security fan... I'm excited to see Devon and Kristen and Ian and Angie come back into the story along with the other Trident boys, and one that only deserves his own introduction - Master Carter, this man is hot as hell... he'll set you on fire, his presence during the story is so extremely sizzling. But not out doing Ben, and his dominant nature the whole team and setup is awesome. Loved it!

About the Author
V. Susan Bennett-Armistead is currently a parent educator and early literacy specialist for Williamston Community Schools as well as an early childhood professional development consultant. Her doctorate from Michigan State University will be in teacher education with emphasis on early literacy development. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Susan worked for fourteen years in the early childhood community as a teacher, director, and advocate for young children and their families. Currently the parents of three children, Susan and her husband await the completion of the adoption of a fourth.

Nell K. Duke is an associate professor of teacher education and educational psychology, an affiliate of the program in school psychology, and co-director of the Literacy Achievement Research Center (LARC) at Michigan State University. Duke received her Bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College and her Masters and Doctoral degrees from Harvard University. Duke's work focuses on early literacy development, particularly among children living in poverty. Her specific areas of expertise include development of informational literacies in young children, comprehension development and instruction in early schooling, and issues of equity in literacy education. Duke is the recipient of the International Reading Association Outstanding Dissertation Award, the National Council of Teachers of English Promising Researcher Award, the International Reading Association Dina Feitelson Research Award, and the National Reading Conference Early Career Achievement Award. She is co-author of the books Reading and Writing Informational Text in the Primary Grades: Research-Based Practices; Literacy and the Youngest Learner: Best Practices for Educators of Children from Birth to Five; Beyond Bedtime Stories: A Parent's Guide to Promoting Reading, Writing, and Other Literacy Skills From Birth to 5; and co-editor of the book Literacy Research Methodologies. Duke teaches preservice, inservice and doctoral courses in literacy education at Michigan State, speaks and consults widely on literacy education, and is an active member of several literacy-related organizations. Duke also has a strong interest in improving the quality of educational research training in the U.S.

Annie M. Moses is a graduate student in learning, technology, and culture at Michigan State University. Her research interests are in aspects of early literacy development and early childhood development, particularly with respect to educational television programs, shared book reading and socio-emotional development. She has worked in a variety of early childhood settings.

Essential Resource

As a literacy researcher, teacher educator, parent and grandparent, I found myself captivated by this comprehensive text on emergent literacy. The authors show how parents and eary childhood specialists can make literacy learning accessible to all children through everyday practices, in a variety of settings. It is an excellent example for how to present research in application for practitioners. I plan to put a copy in my five month old grandson's library and keep several on hand. I will give this book as a gift to new parents and use it in my course instruction for literacy education.

Very comprehensive!

This book is perfect for someone who hasn't been able to take a early literacy course. It covers language and literacy development, ideas for providing literacy rich materials and activities, and how to bring literacy into every environment you create. I learned so much from each chapter that I will use in my work with young children. I also really appreciated the many photos and samples in the book. They make it even easier to put the ideas into practice right away.
