The Gospel According to Hoyle

I am going to open this review by posing a problem. In _The Reefs of Space_ (1963), the reefs are a series of islands of "space coral." The novel makes it clear that they were originally formed by a stream of "steady-state" hydrogen and helium atoms-- a clear referece to the steady-state hypothesis of the astronomer Fred Hoyle. Now neither Fred Pohl nor Jack Williamson could be fairly described as a scientific ignoramus. By the time that this novel was published, they were surely aware that the steady-state hypothesis-- which suggested that the universe had been created by atoms streaming out of a vacuum-- had been superceeded by the big bang theory. So why did they stick to an out of date scientific idea?

The answer lies in the history of how the book was written. In his autobiography, _Wonder's Child_ (1984), Jack Williamson says that he actually began to work on the novel in the late 1950s. He was inspired in part by the social ideas of Walter Prescott Webb and the astronomy of Fred Hoyle:

Webb saw all our precious freedom in danger now with the closing of the Earth's frontiers. The reefs of space, formed between the stars by the steady creation of new matter as the universe expands, could open new frontiers, rich with limitless freedom. (212)

In other words, Hoyle's theory formed the basis for a symbol. It represents a dynamic (if somewhat dangerous), organic, new frontier of freedom, formed by the perpetual wellsprings of life. In opposition to the reefs is the mechanistic, tyrranical, conformist, and brutal government of the solar system-- the Plan of Man. The Plan of Man is co-governed by a dictator (called the Planner) and a super computer (called the Planning Machine).

The hero is Steve Ryeland, once a top government scientist. Now, he has been arbitrarily declared a Risk by the Planning Machine. He wears an iron collar filled with high explosives that can be detonated at any time by security guards. He must report his presence from stop to stop in a computer terminal wherever he goes. He has gaps in his memory. But a chance meeting with Donna Creery, the Planner's daughter, changes his position-- though not his basic condition.

Williamson states that he had a 400 page draft to the novel that had gotten out of control. He and Pohl redrafted it, and Pohl wrote the final draft. It was serialized in _If_, begining in the July, 1963 issue, on sale in May. It had striking and dramatic illustrations by Ed Emshwiller. Kennedy was President. In many of his speeches, he had talked about a New Frontier. The final installment was in the November issue, on sale in October. During that month, Kennedy was assasinated. While Americans certainly did not use these words, they surely felt that they had moved a bit away from the New Frontier and a little closer to the Plan of Man.

Great Concepts

I just finished the last book of the STARCHILD TRILOGY by Pohl and Williamson last week. I thought the first book REEFS OF SPACE was the best.

Some of the things I liked about REEFS OF SPACE:

The Plan Of Man - A super-computer which runs all human affairs. Citizens must constantly check-in at computer terminals for orders ie. before beginning work, after completing each task, before leaving a room, after entering a room etc.

Risks - People who have performed badly, underachieved, or been caught performing unplanned actions or having unplanned thoughts.

The Collar - An explosive collar worn by the Risks which can be detonated at anytime The Plan Of Man sees fit. It also explodes automatically if tampered with.

The Body Bank - If a Risk continues to screw up or underachieve there is still one way he can contribute to society by providing body parts for transplanting onto or into those citizens who need them in order to remain useful to society.

The JunkMan - A man built by using body parts and made to look exactly like one of the donors at The Body Bank in order to take his place so that this donor could escape, the only person ever to do so.

There was some cool scientific stuff too; jetless drive, Hoyle theory, simbiotic relationships. But all that mumbo-jumbo means little to me. Just call me Olaf Simpleton because it was the simpler concepts which I found entertaining and interesting.

One thing left me cold....At one point in the story someone says that they've known several people who were sent to The Body Bank, but they've never known anyone to recieve a body part from there. Nothing else was ever mentioned about that.

Am I the Junk Man?

The Reefs of Space, by Frederick Pohl and Jack Williamson, is the first short novel of the Starchild Trilogy (which includes Starchild and Rogue Star). The novel follows the brilliant (and amnesia induced) scientist Steve Ryeland and his human "computational" companion Oporto through the a future Earth dominated by the Plan of Man Computer. i.e. everyone gets a little strip of paper whenever their next to a console telling them what to do. Think 1984-esque dystopia with a computer Big Brother. Well, Steve's job is to create a "jetless" drive. Also, Steve's a Risk (and has a bomb collar around his neck for doing something against the Plan of Man in the past) and he wants it off. Some reefs, whose the junkman questions, spacelings, and a drug pumpin' version of heaven, all make this a enjoyable read.

This future Earth flies by so fast with the quick prose/action/dialogue that the reader has little time to think about anything else. Is that good? If you want a enjoyable few hours, then yes. Is there anything more than a good yarn, probably not. Great fun!

About the Author

Philip Ridley was born in the East End of London and studied Fine Art at St Martin's School of Art. As a writer his credits include nine children's novels which have brought him a string of awards. His stage plays are The Pitchfork Disney (1991), The Fastest Clock in the Universe (1992), which won t he Meyer-Whitworth Prize, a Time Out Award, and both the Critics' Circle and the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for Most Promising Playwright, Ghost from a Perfect Place (1994), Vincent River (2000), Krindlekrax (premiered by the Birmingham Rep in June 2002) and three plays for young people: Fairytaleheart, Sparkleshark and Brokenville, which received a Fringe First nomination at the Edinburgh Festival. He has enjoyed considerable success as both a writer and director of films: the cult classic The Reflecting Skin (1990) won eleven international awards. His work has been translated into seventeen languages.

Beware--this published edition has missing pages

I have tried buying two copies of this play as published by Methuan Drama and both copies were incomplete...the pages just ended with the play clearly not over, plus it did not contain poems by Mr. Ridley as stated on the Title Page and in the description. This is the publisher's fault, not Amazon's and they will refund my money. But I would avoid purchasing this edition unless you know for sure they've solved the issue or have new, complete copies.

Disturbing Drama

This play was exceedingly disturbing and enthralling. Although I couldn't put the script down, I still read it with my face half-turned away. Some of the dialogue is quite graphic as it recounts the bloody and gruesome barbarity of a post-apocalyptic London and how a group of teenagers "survive" in this new world. In such a dreary atmosphere, you'd think this play would have little to no "happy" portions, but some characters provide perfectly timed comedic relief. However, this comedy then feels out of place and the fact that it IS funny makes a reader/viewer feel displaced and guilty for their comfortable situation outside the play. Aside from what is tragic and what is funny (and when), this play brings questions of family and society forward into a spotlight so bright that it's difficult not to consider the ramifications of our current societal constructs if they remain unaltered. If you're looking for a play that will make you think for days after you've read it, then this is a good choice. If you are faint of heart though, you may consider steering clear of this gruesome tale.

Made me feel nauseous

I bought this for a class and was disturbed by it's horrific content. While it's nicely written, it just gives you a gross feeling about humankind. The entire class also felt....'nauseous' by the story line. A lot to learn, but I rather wish I had not read it.

About the Author
Travis Ford is currently serving as a district chief on shift at Station 9, known as “The Bottoms,” with the Nashville Fire Department in the busiest district and at the busiest house in the city with 39 stations. Station 9 finished fifth on the list of busiest firehouses in Firehouse Magazine in 2014. He has ascended the ranks over his 30-year career in Nashville. He has been responsible for developing and presenting programs in leadership for company and chief officer training and high-rise operations around the country, and served as vice-chair of the high-rise committee for the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA). Mr. Ford has also served as the vice-chair of the National Fire Science Associate’s Degree Program Committee and is currently serving on the High School to College Pathways Committee as part of the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education professional development committee in the development of model fire science course curriculum.

Mr. Ford is the director of the Fire Science Technology Program at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee. In addition, he serves as an adjunct instructor for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s National Emergency Training Center in several areas, including the National Incident Management System, Incident Command for High-Rise Operations, and Fire Protection Systems for Emergency Operations. Mr. Ford holds an associate’s degree in Fire Science from Tennessee State University, a bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration from the University of Memphis, and a master’s of science degree in Human Resource Development from the University of Tennessee. He has also completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy.

A Students Opinion

Last year I completed a course titled "Social Stratification" at Whitman College. After completing the class I decided to keep this book for my own personal collection, and I often refer back to the articles for pleasure reading (I'm a nerd, this probably isn't normal for this text). For our class, this giant reader was our bible, providing us with a wealth of articles that ranged from philosophical to research based to purely academic to personal accounts. The book is well balanced, looking at a multitude of issues from every level of study. After finishing this course, and completing this book, I am now considering pursuing a masters or doctorate in sociology with a focus on class studies. Highly recommended!

Great source for understanding social stratification

Grusky has put together an excellent introduction to the study of social stratification. Coming in at slightly over 1,000 pages, this book has a little something on everything. To Grusky's credit, he also includes some contemporary theories that have only been lightly tested and may not ultimately prove to have much applicable value in the interests of providing a thorough analysis of the questions and issues surrounding stratification. Well worth the time and money.

Wonderfully Complicated...

I picked up a copy of this book after completing book two, The Aris Effect. In some respects, I'm glad I read the second book prior to reading the first. Had I started with this book, I would have felt that Luke and Aris's story was settled, that given all the complications they encountered on their way to being together the ending felt complete as it was. Luke and Aris are neighbors who, over time, become friends and then something much more. It's complicated, however, because Luke is engaged to his longtime love Jessica. Furthermore, Aris hasn't had the greatest experiences with men. While I don't mind a slow burn, the building of their friendship was really slow. The story eventually picked up and had a consistently steady pace until the ending. Since I'd read book two first, I was already a huge fan of Aris and Luke as characters. In this book, however, they seemed like the same people but also very different people. That's a good sign because its indicative of the author's skill at showing character growth and development. I really felt for Jessica, and I wonder if her story will ever be told. Lamar has a gift for writing great dialogue; the language in both books in the series is real and refreshing. My one small gripe, however, is the lack of character descriptions in both books. I love details about character's physical appearances, especially in black romance. In any case, this was a good read.

Who Knew?

Aris Collier is a special young woman , she likes to do make up for horror movies. Luke Donovan is a businessman in a large organization. These two opposites become friends. However, their friendship expands into a complicated relationship. Luke finds that Aris has a quirky personality, can't dance and needs to have a lot of lessons from the cooking network. He also finds out she makes him happy. He's been in a longterm relationship for years but something is lacking, and he just discovers that.

Aris has been in a few non-satisfying relationships and she feels she is just not that kind of girl. She then finds out her drop dead gorgeous friend is just the kind of person she could seriously date. She has to get over that idea and just move on but can she?

The journey these two people travel is funny at times, ridiculous at times but all apart of their journey into becoming the great people they are. I loved their journey. They each discover much about themselves and what the heart wants one it finds its corresponding rhythm.
Great first time read...there is a sequel and I'm on to it..

COMPLICATED STORY OF LOVE AND THE FEAR OF COMMITTMENT

I enjoyed this authors writing style, it was light hearted and interesting much like her character Aris Collier. Aris is her own woman with her own ideas and her own way of doing things. She's just quirky enough to pique the interest of Luke Donovan. Though Luke was unavailable, engaged to be married no less, that could not stop the attraction that he and Aris felt for each other.

Their relationship as friends becomes very strained and complicated when they give up trying to pretend there is no attraction and get into a physical relationship that can only be trouble since Luke is promised to another. The fact that Aris is a very attractive woman who had suitors of her own makes matters even worse when Luke becomes aware of the fact that he has competition for her affection.

They each have a decision to make. Do they cut all ties and pursue these feelings that won't let them go, or do they just walk away? Both choices are easier said than done, but something gotta give.

This was a very good book as well as the sequel The Aris Effect. Loved them both. I'll be reading more from this author.

A good presentation of statistical physics

I used Kittel’s Thermal Physics for my undergraduate statistical mechanics course. I remembered that I had difficulties grasping the main ideas at that time. I can certainly understand the so-so reviews as this book has its good and bad. Statistical physics is one of the harder courses in undergraduate Physics because most Physics courses focus on 1 or 2-particle physics, the concept of many particles is new, the techniques are really different, and some phenomena are not intuitive. On top of that, statistical physics is based on counting states. Since the variables in classical physics are all continuous, statistical physics is typically built on quantum physics, which is not easy to start with. There is no doubt that no book can do a perfect job in explaining statistical/thermal physics for undergraduates.

Overall, this book is not a big book, it contains roughly over a semester of materials. I think the first 9 chapters are the core chapters, then the instructor can pick a couple more chapters as applications to wrap up the course. I can see that the style of this book is different from others. One way to present statistical physics is to present the fundamental assumptions, teach students how to count, and to teach us the techniques to analyze systems with constant temperature, constant pressure and so on. Basically, all the abstract formalities and technical details are presented cleanly and coherently at the very beginning, and then applications at the end. Kittel’s book is different. The theories are presented bit by bit, and interlaced with applications such that the concepts and definitions are introduced with a practical context. This way, the book is less abstract, and more fun to read and teach throughout the whole semester. The downside is that the theories are distributed everywhere. It might not be easy to link everything together to see the whole coherent picture of statistical physics, at least not for the first reading of the book.

For the intention of the book, I think it is pretty well-written. There are pretty good exercises at the end of each chapter. It does not present statistical physics in the cleanest manner, and this is where the confusion and frustration come from. The merit of this book is that it is not as abstract as other books. This makes it a pretty choice for undergraduates who do not like theories after theories for half of the semester. As a side note, this book is better than Kittel’s Solid State Physics book.

Schroeder's Introduction to Thermal Physics is far more readable, and has a good flow to it. Kittel and Kroemer is terribly disjointed, never treating any idea thoroughly before it jumps to the next idea, then doubling back three chapters later to continue with the previous idea. It's next to impossible to develop any kind of large-scale, qualitative view of the material. Giant ideas are presented practically as footnotes. Entropy gets dropped into your lap in chapter 2 with hardly any discussion, just a formula that explains nothing, followed by an insane number of partial derivatives and Greek letters that aren't connected to any fundamental physical ideas in the text. You can play with math for ten chapters without understanding the actual physics.

I hate this book. It's really unclear. Reading through it made me want to fall asleep. Don't get it unless it's absolutely required for your course.
