The result of this audacious exercise is a surprising and engrossing book, one that far surpasses the droning tone of so many astronomy texts. Starting (of course) with the Big Bang and ending with the search for extraterrestrial life, the authors synthesize the results of several scientific fields to present a sort of cosmological consilience. They also emphasize the scientific method and its inherent skepticism as the only way to understand such mysteries as dark matter, stellar formation, and the origin of life on Earth. Although several books are published each year that provide overviews of various branches of science, what's different about this one is the accessible tone of the writing. The authors use mild humor throughout to keep readers going in difficult sections; for instance, when assessing the question of why we live during the rare time when the amounts of dark and not-dark energy are roughly equal in the universe, they relate that cosmologist Michael Turner calls the situation the "'Nancy Kerrigan problem,' in honor of the Olympic figure skater, who asked... 'Why me? Why now?'" This is the most informative, congenial and accessible general look at cosmology to come along since Carl Sagan's Cosmos 27 years ago—and, like Cosmos, it's a companion to a PBS series, in this case a Nova special (to air on September 28 and 29). But Tyson (The Sky Is Not the Limit, etc.), who's director of Manhattan's Hayden Planetarium, and Goldsmith (Connecting with the Cosmos, etc.) are no Sagan clones; they bring a distinct point of view and tone to this title. The point of view surfaces right away, both with their concerted effort to draw in numerous branches of science to explain the story of cosmic evolution, and with the statement that "science depends on organized skepticism." The authors continually refer to the reach and limits of science, explaining, as they offer a chronological tour of cosmic history, just what they think science can tell us and what it can't (as they end the journey, focusing on the possibility of extraterrestrial life, they deliver several sharp blows to true believers of UFOs). The tone is informational, aimed at high clarity, and laced with giddy humor: "A hundred billion years from now... all but the closest galaxies will have vanished over our horizon of visibility. Enjoy the view while you can." Beginning at the beginning, Tyson and Goldsmith tackle the origin of the universe and its nature—from antimatter to dark matter and dark energy to the possibility of multiverses; how the universe became organized; the origin of stars; a fascinating look at the periodic table; the origin of planets, including a vivid discuss of planets outside our solar system; and the origin of life. Much of this material will necessarily be familiar to regular readers of popular science, but even they will benefit from Tyson and Goldsmith's incorporation of the latest cosmological developments, from string theory to recent thinking on dark energy; and if this book breaks out, as it has real potential to do, general readers of every stripe will benefit from the authors' sophisticated, deeply knowledgeable presentation. Since Carl Sagan's book-and-television package Cosmos (1980), astrophysicists have discovered that the universe will probably expand for eternity and have found planets orbiting neighboring stars. That's reason enough to update and redo the Sagan concept. Tyson and Goldsmith's book is allied with their four-hour PBS Nova special, which will air September 28 and 29. This book's popularity is thus ensured and, in effect, introduces the vibrant general-interest literature about individual post-Sagan advances in astronomy and cosmology, which includes Goldsmith's Worlds Unnumbered (1997). The authors adopt a colloquial, even conversational style suited to readers new to the ideas and vocabulary of big-bang cosmology; they make comprehensible the connections between subatomic physics and the structure of the universe. With that as background, the authors then flit between the epoch of infinite density and temperature and the contemporary eon of galaxies, and they sign off with ruminations on extraterrestrial life, though they look askance at UFO devotees. Invaluable and exhaustive

A very good book. I know those who think evolution and astrophysics is nonsense will not like a book like this, but I think most Amazon buyers are well enough educated to understand the difference between religious myth and science. Tyson explains the science (I am a geologist) in a way that is readily understandable and easy to follow. Astrophysics is a tough subject, but he explains it well.

Another great book from America's most intelligent man alive. Neil is hands down the guy America needs today. I wished Neil would get into politics and run for President. We need to have intellectuals and scientists as our role models and heroes. Neil is number one on my list. Read his books, listen to his radio show, watch his TV series and enjoy the depth of his genius mind.

An introduction to cosmology

I made the mistake of not inspecting the publish date of this book before purchase. That date is 2004, and since then a large number of discoveries have been made that make this book mildly "outdated" in some chapters.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed what I read. Neil DeGrasse Tyson has a great way of speaking of cosmology and astronomy in a way that is easily digestible. Topics that traditionally would overwhelm the average reader are made clear and understandable throughout the book, making this a great beginner to intermediate read for anyone interested in the discussed topics.

I did find a few grammatical errors, and the book does jump around a lot in a way that sometimes feels abrasive. But overall, it's a solid book.

a beautiful book, but how to continue??

I came across Dillard's book by mistake, while roaming around the University of Michigan library. I started reading it and couldn't put it down. All I knew about Black English was from movies and TV shows that parodied it (e.g. Airplane). After going through the book and repeating the examples, I couldn't get over just how lovely it sounded. So by now I knew that Black English was a real language -- like Greek or Chinese or Spanish. What next? How does one continue from there?
I decided to visit the Afro-American Studies dept. By then I was a grad student at Indiana University, and innocently enough, I thought that this was what a person in the academia did when they wanted to learn something -- they went to consult the experts... The experience was an overall disappointment. I spoke to several instructors, several students, left messages with the secretaries, but alas -- it was very difficult to get through to people: They were all very suspicious that someone would even think of studying Black English. Eventually I was able to learn a few things from peoples' comments:
- Currently, there is no such thing as a textbook for Black English in the same way that there are textbooks for Spanish or Russian. You will need to make due with books like Dillard's, and there aren't all that many of those either.
- Black English is more than just a vocabulary. A dictionary of "Jive" won't do. You need to pick up some grammar.
- There are many dialects of Black English, and Black English changed over time.
- No one I spoke to had ever heard of a university course in Black English.
- No one I spoke to knew of any book written entirely in Black English, though there are books (including novels) that have generous samples.
- I've found a reference to the New Testament in Black English (I'm NOT refering to the Clarence Jordan's Cotton Patch version of the New Testament), but no one seemed to know where to get a copy (if you do PLEASE let me know).
Eventually, though, a kind instructor pointed me to Zora Neale Hurston's books, for which I couldn't have been more grateful. So, if you're interested in Black English, get Dillard's book and go through it a few times, to appreciate the structure of the language. Then if you would like to see some very beautiful if somewhat out-of-date examples of Black English, pick up a copy of Their Eyes Were Watching God, and in addition to reading a beautiful novel you'll also get a beathtakingly beautiful sample of Black English. Classics on African American Vernacular English AAVE

I came in contact with this whole AAVE (aka Black English) business when I took a linguistics class in undergraduate. The Oakland School Board then in 1996-97 outbursted the controversy of recognizing AAVE as an official instruction language in schools.
On a linguistic persepctive, as this book suggests, AAVE should be considered a dialect of English for it is what linguists call "rule-governed". It means that Black English has a distinctive sets of grammar rules, structures, and sound patterns. It had been hypothesized that West African immigrants came into the country and worked as slaves. They might speak a pidgrin that over course of time developed and became a creole. This is known as the Creole Hypothesis. It explains the striking similarities shared between Plantation English (spoken by Southern Whites) and Black English.
Dillard's book, though published more than 20 years ago, still reflects the distinct linguistic characteristics of AAVE. The dialect distinguishes itself with forestressing syllable, regularization (i.e. using "I goes" rather than "I go"), syllable contaction (i.e. pronouncing "suppose" as /spoz/), perfective "done" form, invariant be form, and more.
AAVE therefore is just like any dialect we might hear people speak except it is often stigmatized; that is, in linguist's language, language is degraded and the speakers feel ashamed to speak the language. Dillard's book deals with grammatical and social aspects of the language. Highly recommended.

Not Good as only resource for CTT+ Prep

I've been teaching CTT+, train-the-trainer courses for a few years and my students enjoy a near 100% pass rate. While this book has some interesting information about Training, Instructional Design, and Development, I would NOT recommend this book to help you prepare for the CTT+ test or video. The questions at the end of each chapter do not reflect the types of questions CompTIA asks on the test, as taking the actual test will show. Additionally, I found a lot of "facts" in this book questionable (I couldn't cross-check because there were no footnotes, endnotes, works referenced, bibliography, etc). At the beginning of the book the author recommends making flash cards to study--learning any of these words would be a waste of time for CTT+. Even the style of the book feels like a textbook--not an interactive guide to help you improve training (see Telling Ain't Training put out by ASTD for a GREAT book on training). If you want books on training, find something else (like the one I just mentioned). If you need help with passing the CTT+, search for resources online or take a class (there are no really good CTT prep books out there, unfortunately). This book, for this test, in my opinion, will not prepare you.

Excellent Study Guide for CTT+ Exam!!!!

The CompTIA CTT+ Certified Technical Trainer All-in-One Exam Guide is an excellent resource to becoming a certified technical trainer! I've been a classroom instructor for several years and when this was first introduced to my department I thought that it would all be review of what I already knew. I was very wrong! Joseph Phillips lays everything out clearly for the reader. He is very good at explaining difficult concepts so that they are very easily understood and retained. Every day I catch myself growing into a better facilitator utilizing the knowledge gained by reading this book.
I know that had I not read this exam guide and studied from it, I never would have passed the CTT+ exam! If you follow the author's advice you will have no trouble passing the CTT+ exam yourself!

Awesome Book!!

Love this book! I am over half way finished with it and it has already more than paid for itself. While it is true I could have studied a bunch of "if ... then" scenarios and just regurgitated what I had learned in order to pass the test, I am thankful for the background Mr. Phillips has provided in this book. I will agree that this book may be wordy at times and goes beyond the objective of simply passing the CTT+ exam, although I would be ashamed to call myself a Certified Technical Trainer while never being introduced to some of the topics contained in this book such as the ADDIE methodology and Kirkpatrick evaluations.
