"For a long time, the accepted view on the early Jewish Christian community has been that after the Jewish war against the Romans that ended in AD 70 with the destruction of Jerusalem, the Jewish Christian community became a marginal phenomenon and soon disappeared in the Gentile Christian church. The contributions to the present book on Jewish believers in Jesus result in a fundamental revision of this picture. It shows that more or less close relations between Jewish believers in Jesus Christ and Judaism continued at least into the Constantinian period (4th century) in spite of the endeavors of leaders on both sides to get their view of a fundamental opposition between Judaism and Christianity generally accepted. I consider the accumulated evidence for the revision of this picture very persuasive. It amounts to a strong suggestion that for a long period the disagreements concerning the person of Jesus did not prevent a continuing awareness of the fact that Jewish believers in Jesus and even Christians from the Gentiles could feel they believe in the same God as the Jews did. This view of the relationship should also have an impact on contemporary Jewish-Christian dialogue."

Dr Oskar Skarsaune is Professor of Patristic Studies and Early Church History at the Norwegian Lutheran School of Theology in Oslo, Norway and Chief Editor of The History of Jewish Believers in Jesus. Dr Reidar Hvalvik is Professor of New Testament at The Norwegian Lutheran School of Theology, Oslo. He is Chairman of the Caspari International Board and Project Director and Co-Editor of The History of Jewish Believers in Jesus.

Excellent, dispassionate scholarship

The previous review, which accuses this massive volume of engaging in apologetics is actually an example of apologetics itself. In point of fact, the scholars involved in this project on the history of Jewish believers in Jesus are far more nuanced in their treatment than the reviewer imagines, and they are well aware of the different groups that would be included under heading of "Jewish believers in Jesus." This volume is actually the first of its kind, demonstrating the ongoing presence and influence of these believers in the early centuries of Church history, despite the every-growing influences of supersessionism. Church historians and historical theologians cannot ignore this important book, which represents the first in a series authored by a multi-national, multi-confessional team of scholars, not polemicists or apologists.

An Amazing Historical Account

Scholarship is indebted to this leading scholar, Oskar Skarsaune, the former dean of the Lutheran Theological School in Oslo. This tells a little told but important story of the history of Jewish followers of Jesus. For some such followers, Jewish identity was thin, but for others, it was deep. Skarsaune draws upon other writers who have expertise in the different historical periods. The book is descriptive and not apologetic. However, the very nature of exposing this history shows that there is some sympathy with this Jewish disciples of Jesus. Christians and Jews really do need to own this volume to fill in a unique gap in historical theology and Church and Jewish history.
