Ricks grew up on the mean streets of West Side Chicago without a father, but with many extended family members and adults in his life-including a strong mother and a range of wonderfully eccentric uncles, aunts, and kindly neighbors. By sharing his stories about the challenges he faced as a fatherless child, the lessons he learned, and the man he has become, Ricks hopes to help fatherless young men become well-rounded adults, inspire absentee fathers to take responsibility for their actions, and encourage single mothers to do what is best for their sons. Right on the Money!

The author pulled every thought out of my head. Although I didn't need to search for Dad, I knew where he was all the time. The trick was figuring out the where didn't mean the who wanted responsibility. I knew I wasn't alone, but had no clue anyone else felt like me. It took a long time getting where I am in my life today. Alone the process is laboring, but you survive especially when you have kids of your own. You make sure they never fell that emptiness you have/had. Thank you Byron Ricks. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to the people who need to find their way to their children/to their Dad.

'We all need to belong.'

Byron Ricks little memoir and self-help book, SEARCHING FOR DAD, is rich in emotion and sensitive in sharing the ache that continues to exist when a father leaves a son. Few writers have directly addressed this tough subject: even fewer have the courage to share with the readers the pain and distress that growing up fatherless creates. The difference in this book as opposed to other autobiographical memoirs is that Ricks has an agenda. That agenda is well stated in his subtitle 'Nine Side Effects of Growing Up Fatherless and How to Overcome Them.'
Chapter by chapter Ricks unfolds his life story, a childhood that negated the existence of a father, the trials of growing up with only a single working mother (though she is full of love for the son), the accidents that result in major physical injuries, and ultimately the confrontation with the birth father. After sharing with us the letter he wrote to the father that was not part of his life, Ricks lists the nine side effects one must overcome: crisis of identity, silent anger, the need to belong, underestimating your own value, misunderstanding character, lack of respect, 'the void', the lopsided view of sex, and not enough love. While this was likely not an easy book to write, Byron Ricks has offered his open soul in hopes that he can help single mothers, absentee fathers, and sons who have grown up without fathers to avoid the consequences of this rather disturbing station in life.
