About the Author
Robert N. Anthony is the Ross Graham Walker Professor Emeritus of Management Control at Harvard Business School. Professor Anthony has been a director of Carborundum Company and Warnaco, Inc., both Fortune 500 companies; for 25 years he has been a trustee of Colby College, including five years as chairman of the board. He has consulted for many companies and government agencies, including General Motors Corp., AT&T, the General Accounting Office, and the Cost Accounting Standards Board. Among Professor Anthony’s awards are the Distinguished Accounting Educator of the Year Award from AAA, Accounting Educator of the Year Award from Beta Alpha Psi, the Meritorious Service Award from the Executive Office of the President, the Distinguished Public Service Medal of the Department of Defense, Comptroller General’s Award of the U.S. General Accounting Office and Distinguished Service Award of the Harvard Business School Association.

"You Keep Using That Word, I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means."

I am not a manager, my business card says I am a scientist, but I ended up being the director of a large set of molecular biology core facilities within a nonprofit academic institution. A faculty member I was collaborating with had this book fall out of his bag in my office. Before I was able to get it back to him I read the first chapter then bought it online. This was back in 2001 and it has helped me ever since. Research Admin borrowed it for a couple of years but it showed back up in the mail since I stamped my name in it.

Most useful: when administration said, "no, you cannot do that, NIH guidelines say that is forbidden", I could sometimes find a kernel of information in this book that instead showed that NIH did allow it. There are buzzwords worth knowing, "institutional offset", but they are clearly explained so when someone uses the buzzword you can go all Inigo Montoya on them. "You Keep Using That Word, I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means."

This is an accounting book for non profits. I would have thought it would be the most boring book I ever cracked. Quite the opposite. The case studies are actually pretty entertaining and you might find one that is a mirror image of the big problem you have today.

Patrick McCarthy is, at 7th dan, hanshi, the highest ranking Westerner in the Dai Nippon Butokukai, Japan's elite traditional martial arts organization. A well-known historical researcher, instructor, and former tournament champion, McCarthy has written several books, including Tuttle's best-selling (10,423 copies) Bible of Karate: Bubishi. His writing has appeared in The Journal of Asian Martial Arts, Inside Kung Fu, Black Belt, Karate International, Australasian Martial Arts, Fighting Arts International, and Budo Dojo.

A good basic guide to a few weapon katas developed by martial art masters in Okinawa.

I have been both a student and instructor of numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kobudo, Kenjutsu, Kendo, Combatives) for more than 60 years. This book was first published in 1999 and though I have read hundreds of martial art and self-defense books over the years, I had not read this one until recently. This book covers (Ancient Okinawan Martial Arts) material that previously had not been translated into English. The author ( Patrick McCarthy) received permission to translate the original text into English.

This book is organized into two parts. Part one (By Taira Shinken) explains the Ryukyu Kobudo Taikan: An Encyclopedia of Ancient Ryukyuan martial arts. This section names the board of directors for the Ryukyu, Bo-jutsu fundamentals, How to hold the Bo, Bo-jutsu Makiwara, The Sai-jutsu of Hamahiga, The Tuifa-jutsu of Hamahiga, The Bo-jutsu of Sueyoshi, The basic kata of Nunchaku-jutsu and the translator's afterthoughts. This part also demonstrates all the basic kata using these weapons.

Part two (By Patrick McCarthy) tells about the Taira Shinken: the father of modern Kobudu. He also covers a short history of Taira's Kata Syllabus.

In conclusion, this book would be of value to those studying Okinawan karate and kobudo (or Kobudu as the author spells it in this text ?). However, without a Okinawan Kobudo expert's guidance, attempting to learn the kata from merely reading this book will be unproductive. If you use this text along with actual training with an instructor of Okinawan Kobudo, you will increase your skill and knowledge of using these weapons.

Disappointment - expected more

Mr McCarthy has disappointment me in this volume. Perhaps its due to the fact that I have trained in these traditional weapons for many years and under a number of highly knowledgable and wise teachers [Motokatsu Enoue, and more recently under his son Kisho Enoue (Hanshi) as well as a number of others; Mr Okawa (Shihan), Mr Mead (Shihan), Mr Jardine (Shihan) and Mr Masaru Shingai (8 Dan) all of whom are a part of the Yuishinkai & RyuKyu Kobujutsu Association (Yuishinkai & Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai)].

I think that it would be better to use Mr McCarthy's book as a reference and learn form the people who still practice the forms and kata the way it was done 50 or more years ago. Of course there will be changes in the form and details but then again people are larger and our diets have changed significantly over the last 1/2 century.

I was also concerned with some of his photos where his shoulders seem to be raised - this was always a criticism I received from Inoue Gansho and from Shingai San during my training under their guidance. I was told that it was a particularly Western problem and it needed to be 'practiced out'.

I was also concerned with some of his postures when holding a bo especially the jodan uke posture. Of course photos in a book are always a problem as one tends to have to pose for them and this in itself is not a natural state, in any case. I have done this and suggest that it is very difficult to get it right. One needs a number of experts to be editors to ensure that the photos reflect the right moment.

In the sai kata there are distinct differences in moves and interpretation, not to say that they are wrong but that there are many different ways of performing the move/s and the reason for this varies from kata to kata. Some, as in photo 96 are performed differently, and has been done as a soto uke followed by a wrist strike and then a jodan strike. These are alternatives which photos and books cannot explain as they are linear and sequential but which live teaching can.

However, I think that Mr McCarthy's research and efforts are certainly well intentioned and valuable and at no time should a reading of his work be devalued because of some minor errors. I will continue to refer to this book along with others he has written and find then useful to compare. I will use these as a reference to changes and interpretations of kata and applications. Also his historical notes and records are vital for those who do not speak and read Japanese and Chinese.

The quality of the book is fine but the lack of occasional diagrams to show orientations and movement leave some critical gaps especially when compared with previous volumes (Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate for example). I think that too much was put into this book which is a pity because previous book shave been excellent.

This book is one of the best resources to teach high intermediate students. As a teacher, I like the second Edition much more than the third Edition and there is no difference with the 4th Edition so I will keep using this edition until it is whether all sold ou or out of printt. A great resource even if you are teaching a speaking class for those who need to get a little bit better when using structures.

Pearls of wisdom from a real leader

The latest book from Steve Murrell, - [...] - founding pastor of Victory Churches in the Philippines and president of Every Nation Churches worldwide. The book begins with a story from Pastor Steve's youth, where he recalls his high school relay team coming in first place only to be disqualified because they forgot the baton. Based on the premise that it doesn't matter how well we do if we forget to pass the baton he goes on to explain the importance of passing the "baton" of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the next generation. The stories in this book are based on Steve's personal experience as a cross-cultural missionary and church planter as well as his current role as leader of an international movement of churches.

100 Years From Now: Sustaining a Movement for Generations is definitely a manifesto for the Every Nation movement in particular, but it is much more. The principals in this book are timeless and would benefit any Christian who is serious about "passing the baton" and obeying the Great Commission of Christ. Steve Murrell's writing style is enjoyable and very easy to read. I would recommend this book to all my friends!

Made me question myself too: 100 years from now; what have I left behind, as an individual, as a minister (if I may say) of the Gospel, as a parent, as a wife, as a friend? If I live 100 years from now, who have I become in my son and his children and his children's children's eyes? Am I a part to sustain the movement for generations? It can be a tool for devotions too.

This great book helped me rekindle my fire. Hearing why others have gone and obeyed reminded me why we went and encouraged me to go again. This book also served as a great daily devotional, and I recommend it to all who would heed the Great Commision.

Adequate introduction to perspectives on peace & justice

Purchased this book for a class. It provides a solid overview of contemporary issues, although I find a number of Thompson's conclusions dubious. (His confidence in international/multilateral institutions and agreements is unwarranted; the assertion that "American colonialism seems indistinguishable from European colonialism" (p. 16) ignores the far larger scope of the latter.) Published in 2003, the material is somewhat out of date (i.e. no analysis of the impact of the U.S. invasion & occupation of Iraq). The synopsis of Catholic Social Teaching isn't bad, although the book certainly could have devoted much more space to the topic. (For a comprehensive treatment of Catholic Social Teaching, I recommend the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.)

It's the bullseye book I've been looking for

Uncompromising, fearless, and accurate--this is the one I've waited for. Finally, a Christian who boldly tackles issues like sweatshops, the World Bank and IMF, militarization and its effects on poverty, America's role in arms sales to the Third World, the environment, and world peace. The facts, figures, and graphs are there for anyone who wants them, but it's not a dull government-style book. It's rebellious and astounding, and makes you feel like taking action. It's also loaded with relevant scripture examinations and lists of resources (organizations, books, nonprofit agencies) who attend to the issues Thompson raises.
Enough with silly sunday School classes about stories and opinions; THIS should be the textbook of sunday School classes of the truly justice-minded churches of America.

A great Introduction

This book by Prof. Thompson fills a gap in Catholic teaching on peace and justice. I would hope that this book gets wide circulation among clergy, especially deacons in the Catholic Church. This book gives a very good historical overview of the wide range of issues that Christian peacemakers face in the world.
As good as this book is as an introduction, I think an exploration of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social teaching would round off the presentation. Also, there is a need to discuss practical application of Catholic teaching such as Princpled Nonviolence and grassroots praxis.
The range and depth of the book is a welcome addition to a growing attempt by Catholic theologians and ethicists to apply the Gospel to the "signs of the times". Kudos for a job well done ! One will eagerly await the second volume of Christian praxis.

I bought this book with every intention of reading it on my flight next week. Mistakenly, I figured, I'd read a little of the first chapter. Two hours later, I'm halfway done with entire book. It's well written and engaging. Must read if you're GREENWALL.

Being a fan of OpTic Gaming for many years, it is really awesome to finally see their biggest members share their stories. Whether you are into video games or not, this book is a great read simply because it is not just about video games but it's also about their personal lives and how they have been changed by competitive gaming. I have learned a lot about these authors that I had never known before. While many might not think a book about eSports and video games would be interesting, there are a lot of struggles each of these people had to go through in order to become the successful organization that they are today.

Excellent book

Sigmund Freud's correspondance are mostly fertile, but sometimes, according to his correspondent, they are quite better. This one is a pure treasure, for Arnold Zweig is an excellent writer. It is so funny to read him addressing Freud as "Father Freud" and to read Freud addressing him as "Meister Arnold". When Freud was not in a rivalry position, he could be a very nice character.
