Acclaim for Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death

“As a fervent evangelist of the age of Hollywood, I publicly opposed Neil Postman’s dark picture of our media-saturated future. But time has proved Postman right. He accurately foresaw that the young would inherit a frantically all-consuming media culture of glitz, gossip, and greed.”

—Camille Paglia

“A brillant, powerful and important book. This is an indictment that Postman has laid down and, so far as I can see, an irrefutable one.”

—Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post Book World

“He starts where Marshall McLuhan left off, constructing his arguments with the resources of a scholar and the wit of a raconteur.”

—The Christian Science Monitor

“This comes along at exactly the right moment.... We must confront the challenge of his prophetic vision.”

—Jonathan Kozol

Introduction to the Twentieth Anniversary Edition

Now this?

A book of social commentary published twenty years ago? You’re not busy enough writing e-mails, returning calls, downloading tunes, playing games (online, PlayStation, Game Boy), checking out Web sites, sending text messages, IM’ing, Tivoing, watching what you’ve Tivoed, browsing through magazines and newspapers, reading new books—now you’ve got to stop and read a book that first appeared in the last century, not to mention the last millennium? Come on. Like your outlook on today could seriously be rocked by this plain-spoken provocation about The World of 1985, a world yet to be infiltrated by the Internet, cell phones, PDAs, cable channels by the hundreds, DVDs, call-waiting, caller ID, blogs, flat-screens, HDTV, and iPods? Is it really plausible that this slim volume, with its once-urgent premonitions about the nuanced and deep-seated perils of television, could feel timely today, the Age of Computers ? Is it really plausible that this book about how TV is turning all public life (education, religion, politics, journalism) into entertainment; how the image is undermining other forms of communication, particularly the written word; and how our bottomless appetite for TV will make content so abundantly available, context be damned, that we’ll be overwhelmed by “information glut” until what is truly meaningful is lost and we no longer care what we’ve lost as long as we’re being amused.... Can such a book possibly have relevance to you and The World of 2006 and beyond?

I think you’ve answered your own question.

A much needed exploration into the philosophy of media
By Ben Barczi
Occasionally one stumbles across a work which perfectly summarizes an era. For example, we hail the muckracker novels, primarily "The Jungle," as a brilliant picture of the late 19th century in America; likewise, any Jonathan Edwards sermon captures the essence of Puritan New England. But Neil Postman, in "Amusing Ourselves to Death," has created not a picture, but an exposition of the state of America today. That it is an expostion, is extremely important.
Postman's thesis in this brief but articulate book consists of two tenets: (1) The form of communication, to some extent, determines (or is biased toward certain types of) content; (2) Television, as our modern-day uber-form of communication, has biases which are destructive toward the rational mind. TV teaches us to expect life to be entertaining, rather than interesting; it teaches us to expect 8-minute durations of anything and everything (anything else is beyond our attention span); it teach us to be suspicious of argument and discussion, and instead to accept facts at face value.
Furthermore - and, by far, the most important discovery Postman makes in this book - TV teaches us to live a decontextualized life. Just as a TV program has nothing to do with anything before or after it, nor the commericals inside it, we learn to view life as a series of unconnected, random events which are entertaining at best, and bear no significance toward any larger picture.
As a culture, America has lost its ability to integrate experiences into a larger whole; and Postman's explaination for part (not all) of this problem's development makes perfect sense. It certainly is true that the vast majority of Americans are perfectly happy not to develop any sort of framework or philosophy; life is simply life, and one doesn't need to consider it.
Even today's elite students, who are certainly able to integrate lessons and perform well academically, have fallen to this malady; as David Brooks pointed out in his searingly accurate article, "The Organization Kid," (Atlantic Monthly, April 2001) top-notch students no longer attempt to build any sort of moral or philosophical structure from their studies; a life lived in a context, makes no sense to the student who has grown up watching the decontextualized television screen.
It is extremely important that today's Americans take a close look at just what effects the television has had on themselves and their children; Postman's work is dead on target. We have moved, as a nation, from those who seek entertainment as a means to an end (most particularly, rest between productive work), to those who seek entertainment as an end in itself. And, as Huxley realized in Brave New World, this is the undoing of Western civilization - a prosaic fade away into an entertained oblivion. Or, as T.S. Eliot put it in "The Hollow Men," "This is the way the world ends/ not with a bang but a whimper."

A classic
By David Darlington
Postman's book is a harsh diatribe against the television industry and its effects on intellectual discourse in the United States. Postman argues that television, especially when compared to the written word, cannot foster deep, rational thought in its viewers, because it requires absolute passivity from them. Television can only be about entertainment, and its cultural dominance, Postman argues, has had negative effects on education, politics, and religion.

The first half the book dedicated to Postman's updating of the famous Marshall McLuhan postulate, "the medium is the message." Postman agrees, but takes it even further, stating in chapter one that "the medium is the metaphor." What he means by this is that our language -- how we communicate -- is only a metaphor for reality. We describe as best as we can what we see and know, but our method of communication circumscribes how and what we can actually communicate. Postman argues that whichever mode of communication we chose to communicate with -- be it oral, written, or televisual -- each comes with its own set of limitations. That is to say, "the form excludes the content." Some ideas simply can't be expressed by certain forms, which should be obvious to anybody who has tried to write a sarcastic email without the appropriate smiley face at the end.

Postman then guides the reader through a history of communication, laying out eras where oral, print, or visual communicative forms were culturally dominant. For Postman, the print era (or "age of typography"), which he dates roughly from the Reformation to the 19th century, is when rational argument reached its pinnacle. The form of the written word, Postman argues, requires the marshalling of evidence and the presentation of that evidence in a logical order on behalf of the writer, and patience and discernment on the part of the reader. Only in the printed word could complicated truths be clearly and rationally conveyed. During the 19th century, when print had reached hegemony in communications, rational thought was most most valued. A striking example that Postman provides is the Lincoln-Douglas debates. While these were certainly public spectacles (usually held at state or county faires), Postman presents them as if they were dueling long-form essays. In one particular debate (Peoria, October 16, 1854), Stephen Douglas went first for three hours, after which Lincoln suggested everyone go home to have dinner and come back in the evening. They did, and when they returned they were treated to another four hours of oratory, starting with Lincoln's rebuttal of Douglas. This sounds more like a paper session at an academic conference than a political debate, which is Postman's point exactly. Lincoln and Douglas did in fact write their speeches out, to make sure they made sense, though neither man was insensitive to audience response. In this era -- the era defined by typography as the leading communicative form -- major public figures, be they politicians, preachers, or activists, were expected to be able to make a long, rational, public argument, and the people were willing to listen to it. They weren't bored into a catatonic state by long speeches at all, Postman says, but rather interacted with the orators to encourage them, or challenge them to stay on point.

In the modern (television) age, however, things are different. Following the maxim "the form excludes the content," political discourse is no longer about rational argument, says Postman, but about entertainment and appearance. People get bored if television images are too static, so change has to happen, and frequently. There's no time to lay out a rational argument, but no matter, the passive audience doesn't want long, convoluted logic anyway. Television makes its viewers demand constant stimuli, so if things take too long, people just tune out. Debates rarely last even 90 minutes (poor Stephen Douglas), and politicos are lucky to get five minutes on a particular question. Not that they're expected to give a logical answer, anyway. In fact, they can repeat catchphrases as much as they want ("lockbox!" "it's hard work!") as long as they don't look bored (Bush 1992), condescending (Gore 2000), or annoyed (Bush 2004). Who really remembers what was said at the debates in the last presidential campaign anyway? Indeed, did those commenting on the debates immediately following ever really analyze what was being said? In rare cases, such as on PBS, you'd get issue analysis, but for the most part television political commentary was limited to "how did the candidate come across to voters?" "Did he appear honest? Likeable?" Postman says that we're no longer in the Age of Typography, but rather in the Age of Show Business. Television's rules control how we communicate today, even if we aren't on television ourselves.

Take, for example, religion. Postman spends a chapter on religious discourse in the modern era, basically laying into television preachers. Postman (who was Jewish) found some televangelists intelligent, others insulting and emotionally manipulative, but, above everything else, they were all entertainers. There was very little theological depth compared to say, Jonathan Edwards or even Charles Finney. Postman comes to two conclusions about religion on television:

The first is that on television, religion, like everything else, is presented, quite simply and without apology, as an entertainment. Everything that makes religion a historic, profound, and sacred human activity is stripped away; there is no ritual, no dogma, no tradition, no theology, and above all, no sense of spiritual transcendence. On these shows, the preacher is tops. God comes out as a second banana. The second conclusion is that this fact has more to do with the bias of television than with the deficiencies of these electronic preachers...

The point is that in the Age of Show Business, nothing escapes becoming entertainment. Postman reserves special scorn for the way education and news are handled by television. The news chapter is specially informative. Our news programs (even the "serious" news shows), he says, are basically entertainment, because they have music introducing ideas and pretty people ("talking hairdos") telling the stories. News items are stripped from local context, commodified, and given to the viewer in bit-sized chunks, separated by the "now.... this!" phenomenon, which serves to make the viewer dismiss it all as meaningless candy he or she can do nothing about. The "now... this!" phenomenon can be tried on any news broadcast. Tonight, for example, and update on the Iraq will be followed by ("now.... this!") Britney Spears' latest escapades. Postman says this serves to reduce it all to meaningless trivia.

Amusing Ourselves to Death is definitely a polemic. Postman starts off the book with a comparision of George Orwell's 1984 with Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, stating that the point of his book is exploring the possibility that Huxley's dystopia was correct. Unlike 1984, where people are controlled by violence and pain, Huxley presented a world where people are controlled by giving them every pleasure they want. For Postman, television is the device that controls us by entertainment and pleasure. Is Postman provocative? You bet. But he does raise important questions about our uncritical acceptance of what we see on television, and our easy adoption of any new technology that comes down the pipe. Amusing Ourselves is a book that should be read and discussed by as many people as possible.

For anyone interested in exploring the meaning of the rapid eclipse of ordinary reality and how it is being changed and altered by the rise of the electronic media, this book is very important. From the introduction and Postman's tongue-in-cheek comments about the novel 1984, his observations regarding the cogency of British author Aldous Huxley's technotronic nightmare vision in "Brave New World" through out the book right up to its conclusion, Postman binds your interest by illustrating and documenting how the rise of the elecrtonic media and its manipulation of what you see in way of news and entertainment has inexorably changed the meanings, purposes and ultimate uses of politics, economics, and technology. As Huxley himslef warned, totalitarian societies need not arise through violent overthrow of the democracies using brutality, cruelty and violence, but can also occur whenever the citizenry is successfully deluded into apathy by petty diversions and entertainments, as well. Postman shows how the electronic media's presentation of facts and fcition in an entertaining fashion diverts us, channeling our attention, money, and energies in ways that make us much more susceptible to social, political and economic manipulation and eventual subjugation. The book is a bit difficult to read at points, but well worth a sustained effort and a little concentration. For any citizen concerned about how the media is rapidly changing the rules of political, social, and economic engagement, and what it portends for the future, this book is a must read. And follow it up with Postman's book "Technopoly", which picks up where this book leaves off.

BDSM sexuality as a powerful tool for self-transformation and the realization of magical and spiritual aims

• Details how to combine the 6 major types of S&M stimulation with sexual stimulation for magical and transformative purposes

• Explores sado-magical workings from both submissive and dominant perspectives

• Traces the roots of the BDSM tradition from ancient pagan and shamanic rituals to historical figures such as the Marquis de Sade, Aleister Crowley, and Anton LaVey

Sex magic allows us to tap in to the most abundant power source available: sexual energy. Magicians, shamans, and fakirs throughout history have used physical stimulation and ritual to harness sexual energy, unlock inner states of consciousness, and activate the ability to influence their surroundings. While pleasure is often the focus of this stimulation, pain is just as effective, if not more so.

Combining both pleasure and pain, the sadomasochistic practice of Carnal Alchemy offers a powerful tool for self-transformation and the realization of magical and spiritual aims. Authors Stephen and Crystal Dawn Flowers explain the sado-magical workings of Carnal Alchemy from both the perspective of the submissive partner as well as the dominant. They detail the 6 major techniques of sadomasochistic stimulation--bondage, flagellation, piercing, penetration, clamping, and heat/cold--and how they can be combined with sexual stimulation for magical purposes. They trace the roots of the BDSM tradition in ancient pagan rites of passage, in indigenous shamanic rituals, and through historical figures who used this form of sexuality in their magic and philosophy, from the Marquis de Sade to more modern exemplars such as Aleister Crowley, Ernst Schertel, and Anton LaVey.

This guide also covers specialized furniture and tools and the decor of “the Chamber” to trigger states of consciousness in which the Sado-Magician can effectively express his or her will.

CHAPTER 8
THE CHAMBER

THE CHAMBER AND EQUIPAGE

Activity as sacred as Carnal Alchemy or Sado-Magic is often thought to deserve a special place in the home or apartment set aside for it alone. Having a chamber, or “dungeon,” just for this part of one’s life has a special purpose as well. It is usually the case that partners do not live out the dominant/submissive lifestyle twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week--and in such cases it is valuable to have a space set aside that symbolizes that part of their lives together. It is also true that entering such a space can trigger certain responses in the souls of the participants, which allow them greater psychological freedom--both from within themselves and with regard to their partners--to live out their innermost fantasies to the fullest.

Such a chamber can also be a place where the artistry and imagination of the participants can be expressed--not only in the activity there, but also in the actual design and equipping of the room. And since it is unlikely that you will be offered a videotape deal on cable TV telling you how to outfit your home-dungeon, we will just have to provide some basic help in this chapter.

A word of warning though: all the fancy equipment in the world won’t make your magical and erotic adventures something they wouldn’t otherwise be. The equipment can only enhance what is already there. If the spirit and empathy are not right, no amount of furniture or “infernal contraptions” will help. But because these arts are so involved with a fairly complex set of aesthetic rules and ceremonies, and because there is often the need to be able to move smoothly through a wide variety of physical sensations, the equipping of at least a minimally furnished chamber is highly recommended.

PURPOSE OF THE CHAMBER

The initial purpose of the chamber or dungeon is to set your activities apart from the rest of your life. This is not a means to “protect” your everyday life from the results of your Sadean practices--the effects of such scenarios are almost universally beneficial--but rather the intention is to intensify the feelings and energies generated by such activity. The chamber functions in a way similar to that of the laboratory for scientists, the studio for artists, or the temple for magicians. It contains and focuses the activities that they may be more pure, more intense, and more powerful.

It you go back to our discussion of how transformations are made you will see that there must be an act of separation, of isolation of the subjects from outside influences—this must take place before the transformational play is enacted. It is after this that the subjects are re-integrated, re-included, into the mundane world. The chamber is meant to enhance this process and this experience.

The “chamber effect” can be obtained in several ways. You can, of course, have a special room set aside to serve exclusively as a “playroom,” or you can make some modifications to a room being used for some other purpose that can be converted quickly and easily into such a room. A cellar, garage, or attic space is ideally suited for the “multiple purpose room.” Many will find it necessary to make their own master bedroom into the chamber. In such an event the importance of certain symbolic or ceremonial actions and/or objects becomes relatively more important.

When a room normally used for more “mundane” purposes is to be temporarily transformed into a Sadean chamber, don’t forget to take some time to figure out how to change the entire atmosphere of the room into something special. Fabrics can be used to drape over furniture. Pictures or other decorations not conducive to the atmosphere should be removed or draped. Candles or perhaps red and/or blue light bulbs can be used for illumination. (Such dim lighting may be hazardous for inexperienced dominants who must often gauge the severity of some of their activities by alterations in the skin tone of their submissives, since especially red light makes red marks on the skin virtually invisible!)

DESIGN OF THE CHAMBER

Any well-equipped chamber should have the means for positioning (and restraining, if necessary) the submissive in at least three basic postures: standing, lying, and bending. It will also, by whatever means, have, or be capable of taking on, a very special atmosphere. This atmosphere is gained through a combination of interior design principles (furniture, wall-hangings, wall color), and other sensory tools such as mirrors, music, lighting, even incense and special drinks. All the senses are to be considered--to enhance them, subject them to pain or pleasure, or to deprive them.

Certain pieces of equipment are best built into the structure of the chamber or room. There should be a way to fix the submissive in a horizontal or lying position (a bed or bed-like rack is ideal for this), and a way to fix them in a standing position.

The vertical position can also easily be achieved with a minimum of alteration to the room by anchoring a large eyebolt into a brace above the ceiling. This should be secured and tested to be sure that it could bear the entire weight of the person who is to be secured to it. This should not, however, be used for actual suspension of the person’s full weight. Suspension has special requirements and should not be tried by beginners. Also you should consider using “panic” snap hooks, which make it easy for submissives to release themselves, and allow dominants to release sub-missives very quickly in case of an emergency.

here's a description from goodgoth.com

Carnal Alchemy by Dawn/ Flowers

Carnal Alchemy re-introduces a powerful philosophy and magical technology to the contemporary world of western sexual magic. Sadomasochistic sexuality is among the least understood aspects of sexual expression. It is often tinged with overtones of the forbidden and mystery - all these things, as well as certain physiological aspects of it - make this a powerful for of sexuality to be combined with spiritual and magical aims. The text traces the historical roots of this tradition in ancient pagan rites of passage and of the agricultural cycle. But most of the text is devoted to the actual theory and practice of techniques of Sado-Shamanism or Sado-Magic in contemporary life.Paperback 86 pgs.

An intriguing approach to sex magic
By Taylor Ellwood
This book is an intriguing read, particularly if you're into sex magic and BDSM. It's well written, informative (in a general way), and offers some ideas of how to incorporate BDSM into sex magic. The authors also offer a lot of theory in this book, explaining what carnal alchemy is and even offer a bit of practical advice in terms of how to play safe in BDSM and how to work sex magic through the dominant-submissive paradigm. I particularly like the list of recommended readings, which give readers some more reading they can do.

Also the explanations of the tools and various techniques will prove useful and illuminating, for anyone into BDSM. I also like that the authors stress the importance of having some experience with BDSM and being both a submissive and dominant.

However, while I did like this book a lot, I would've liked to have seen more focus on the physiological/psychological aspects of BDSM and how those aspects could be applied to carnal alchemy. Given that alchmy is a transformation, I would like to know how the authors factored in physiological changes and how those changes could be purposely used by either the dominant or submissive. The same applies to the psychological aspects.

Too hot to put down
By Reyner
The academic sounding stuff has been well-covered by the other reviewers, so I can happily focus on my personal feelings about Carnal Alchemy.

Being someone who experiences the world in degrees of sensual richness, my most intense, most rich sensual experiences are also those which I have an in-depth understanding of. To both the beginner and the experienced BSDM enthusiast, the content of this book when understood opens the door to a baptism in Carnal Alchemy, an array and depth of sensory experience that well transcends the confines of paper and print. Not to mention new levels of intimacy with ones self and ones partner(s).

I expected it to be a bit fluffy, but it was much darker.
By Black Heart Ali
Barbie Girl has the potential to be a great YA read, if not for a few minor flaws and one fairly big one. I'll get to that; first, let me tell you all the things that are right about this book.

Barbie is a damaged girl from a broken home. Not damaged in the way everyone thinks; she wears a tough skin, flirts and teases to get what she needs, and doesn't let anyone give her any crap for it. Everyone thinks she is nothing more than drugged out crazy slut. Though she doesn't argue with them, she is none of those things. What she really is, is a poor girl with a drugged out crazy mother and an autistic little brother who relies on Barbie for care. Barbie will do anything to graduate and get Everett away from Alabama and their mother. Graduating means passing Algebra, which she currently is not doing. Hoping Dylan can tutor her into graduation, she bites the bullet and asks for his help. Something she does not often do and especially not from Dylan.

I liked Barbie, quite a lot actually. She's a rare beast in the teen world. The skirts she wears would put me in an early grave if I was her mother, but she's a good girl at heart. Always there to take care of everyone else with no thought to herself.

Dylan has all the makings of a good guy, if he could just get out of his own head and the perfect imaginary world he's designed there. He wants to do the right thing but he's so far out of the loop that he doesn't always realize what that is. Dylan aggravated me, often, but to no fault of his own. It's more through circumstance than choice and I could empathize with him, for the most part.

Acosta created some very intriguing characters. Not only with Barbie and Dylan but also their families and friends. Third, Dylan's best friend, is amazing. I loved him from start to finish. If only we could all have a Third in our lives. Roxie, a goth (ish ~ her room is pink, and she listens to Taylor Swift) girl comes in late to the story but in a huge way. I liked her very much too and hope to get much more of both of these two in Barbie World (book #2).

This book did not take me where I thought it would. I expected it to be a bit fluffy (really, her name is Barbie Starr), but it was much darker. Barbie is not a little princess with normal teenage girl problems. Her life is tragic and Dylan is the first bright spot she's ever allowed herself to hope for. But life never works out quite like we hope for, does it? The ride these kids take is tragic and heartbreaking at its core and it's not the happiest of endings. This isn't a fairytale where Malibu Barbie gets her Ken and they drive off into the sunset in a pink convertible Corvette, missing every speed bump in the way.

The problems I mentioned earlier are few and small. Except for one. The one major thing that holds this novel back is the editing. Now, I am a fan of indie authors and read a ton of self published books and usually make no comments about editing. I understand how incredibly hard it is to self edit and to pay for professional editing. That said, Barbie Girl needs it and I hope it becomes successful enough to get a bit of extra help there because the story itself is a good one. But there were too many times where I felt like I was reading a print out from one of those software programs where you speak and it types it for you. Too many words were, well... just wrong. I am not going to say any more about it though, I understood what was happening throughout the book and that is really what matters. I just know some have a problem with it and I would not feel right not mentioning it.

I also want to take a second to applaud Acosta for dealing with some fairly mature subject matter without ever making it feel cheap or too sleazy or crude. I think she really kept her target audience in mind and wrote a book about struggle, growth, love, responsibility and bravery.

Enjoyable story; some frustrating parts to it, but it did keep me reading
By S
When I bought this book at another retailer, the words "Baby Doll Series" were not beside the title, so that ending came as a surprise to me. Was not expecting a cliffhanger and that this was going to be a continuation series, a four-part series at that. I have to admit the ending annoyed me some, leaving me just a little frustrated. More than that, though, I was frustrated by the hero. Man, did Dylan gall me at times. I know he's a teen-age boy, both leads are in high school, and teenagers have growing up to do, but Barbie was twice the person Dylan was.

Yes, this YA story has the troubled teen going on; Barbie is literally from the wrong side of the tracks. She's got the neglected little brother, the falling-down house, the negligent, drug-addicted mother, and she's got a bad-girl rep at school. But even with all that, stuff that's been done before, I still cared about Barbie and even came to love her. I cried at a couple points in the story. Poor Barbie trying to be something, longing for a better life, longing for something good, something like Dylan, but that's one problem I have with this romance: I don't think he's good enough for HER.

I kind of liked him at first. He's got the nerd thing working for him, and I do love a cute nerd hero. But he is so hung up on little freaking perfect Katie. Katie is the mean girl, the fake girl, and when Dylan looks at her, she is a slow-motion reel of beauty and grace. I hated her. And I began to hate him for being fake like her. Yes, it is high school with all the requisite drama, but I was so angry at him for saying he loved Barbie but would still find himself wrapped up in Katie. There is some angst there, seeing Dylan with his arm around Katie, kissing Katie, but he is upset with Barbie and his best friend, Third. A big misunderstanding there. But still, I expected more from Dylan. He's so caught up in appearances, in right and wrong, and he's so judgmental.

His character definitely needs to grow some, to evolve, and I guess the author plans to show us that as the series continues. Sometimes his character made no sense to me, but maybe I'm too long out of high school and don't understand teen-age boys. As it stands now, I have no desire to even see Barbie with him. I can only hope that the author puts some good grovel time in store for Dylan. I would relish that. I'm a mean old woman who wants him to suffer. As the story ends, I'm hopeful of that because the author at least shows us Barbie showing fake boy and his fake girlfriend that Barbie can give as good as she gets. Can you tell I like Barbie? She's the stand-out of the story. She makes this story.

I also loved Third. I LOVED him, the chubby cutie, so sincere and steadfast. I was to the point of thinking, Barbie, pick him, pick him, and forget Dylan. I can't tell you how lovable Third is. There is a prom scene that was so sweet. Kind of reminded me of "Pretty In Pink," and I loved that movie. Very similar feeling here in this story. Girl thinks she's not good enough, when really it's the boy not good enough for her. Plus, Barbie ends up with some quirky, lovable new friends, and I guess Third would be Duckie. And then, we have that prom scene, with Barbie in her second-hand, 'vintage' dress. Very PIP.

In this first story, we see Barbie pretending to be Dylan's girlfriend. She'll up his cool factor if he tutors her, all the while Dylan is hoping this will increase his appeal to Katie. But along the way, people fall in love, the ones you think will fall and some you're not expecting to. There is also some heart-breaking violence, under-age drinking, some language, and mild sexual situations. The story leaves the reader very much hanging, a lot of loose ends to tie up. I do think I will read the next part of the series, if only to see what happens to Barbie.

The story is told in first-person, alternating from both leads' points of view, and I do happen to like that in a story. There are typos and editing issues in this book, commas needed here and there, punctuation issues, run-on sentences and several misspelled words, just things that I do notice, but I do tend to give allowance to that if the story pulls me in. And BARBIE GIRL did do just that. It's very teen YA with high school drama, and I think for the price it is worth checking out. Overall, I enjoyed BARBIE GIRL and the drama. Even with the issues mentioned, there is heart to this story, and it all centered around a vulnerable but tough, young heroine.

I'm really enjoying Barbie and Dylan's stories. This book wasn't what i thought it would be at all. Yeah ok so i thought "Barbie Girl", this is going to be another hot stuck up girl who wants to be popular and hurt everyone along the way. OMG! I was soooo wrong. This book is nothing like that at all.
Barbie might look like the typical Barbie Doll but she does not act like one at all. She is just a confused girl trying to numb her problems away. Until the day Dylan comes into her life that is and everything changes. I love Dylan but i was so frustrated with him only seeing barbie in the way all the rumors at school portrayed her to be. Boys are so naive. Dylan starts to tutor Barbie in math and as they spend time together he starts to see Barbie in a new way. Barbie doesn't care what people say about her. She's just Barbie, messed up family and all. Dylan wants so much to be able to be like her but can't get over the fact of what the kid at school might think.

Barbie has finally let the walls around her heart fall down to let Dylan in. Shes actually falling really hard for him. They are great until there is a huge miss understanding at Thirds house, Dylan's supposed best friend.. Dylan wont let Third or Barbie explain and turns his back on them. Ok, I'm thinking huge jerk now.

What do you think Dylan does now? Stupid Stupid boy..

I love Third. He reminds me of a great friend I had back in high school. He's a bit chubby and awkward but a great friend. The one's you could just be yourself with and let loose. Third understands Barbie and he see's her for what she truly is inside. Barbie has never had a friend like him before.

Barbie isn't all tight clothes and bad attitude. Shes got a soft side screaming to come out. that is if you just let her be herself and get beyond that huge wall she's put up.

I am seriously in ah of what that girl went through. No one should ever be put in a situation like that. oh and whats with the ending?? OMG! I checked goodreads looking for the next book. I don't see it. please oh please tell me its coming soon. I need more Dylan and Barbie and so will you once you've read this really great book. . :)

This book is a wonderfully written, and an inspiring read
By Amazon Customer
This book is a wonderfully written, and an inspiring read. The author shares moments of her life that leaves any reader self-reflecting on the state of their own life. There are many simple pleasures in life. The author wonderfully brings this out in her own words. There's also life's disappointments, from which we grow stronger, wiser, and more compassionate towards others. Lastly but certainly not least, are the authors moments of some of her most hilarious experience. I strongly recommend anyone to read, relax, and enjoy this book. - C.T.

A great practical field book
By Howmuchcanakoalabear
For students of palaeo and forensic anthropology, this book is an excellent field guide and reference. Although some of the terminologies and formulae are American-orientated, Bass has produced an excellent supplement to standard texts which makes identification of 'minor' skeletal parts a bit easier. It's a pity about the spiral binding which limits its life off the bookshelf. I ended up removing the covers which I covered in plastic book wrap and replaced within the wire spiral - hopefully this will entend its life.

It would be useful if future editions could include stature regression formulae for a wider cross section of world geographic groups (broader than just America - we are not all the same!). It would also be useful to develop an indexed interactive CD version which could be loaded onto a laptop.

Overall, an excellent resource.
