The Butcher: Anatomy of a Mafia Psychopath, by Philip Carlo

The New York Times bestselling author of Gaspipe and The Ice Man, Phillip Carlo returns with a hair-raising portrait of arguably the most depraved psychopath in the history of the Mafia, mob enforcer Tommy “Karate” Pitera. The Butcher tells the riveting true story of a hit man who loved his work too much—a maniac believed responsible for more than sixty remarkably brutal murders—whom even organized crime’s most cold-blooded assassins feared. Another riveting journey into the darkest corners of the underworld, Carlo’s The Butcher is destined to be a true crime classic alongside Wiseguys by Nicholas Pileggi and Underboss by Peter Maas.

From Publishers Weekly
Carlo once again delves into the world of the Mafia to bring to light a disturbing portrait of one of the most ruthless killers in criminal history and the series of events that eventually lead to his arrest. Tommy Karate Pitera rose from humble beginnings to become the Mafia's top hit man. For over a decade, he settled professional and personal scores, savagely murdering and dismembering some 60 victims. Hill does a fine job in his reading, imbuing long passages of statistics and exposition with just enough emotion to keep the listener interested. His Mafioso accents fit perfectly with the characters, especially his rendition of Pitera's well-noted high-pitched speaking voice, which brings an additional chill to the character and his crimes. A fine listen for any true crime fan. A Morrow hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 28). (Nov.)

Review
"Mafia master Carlo is the unrivalled king of true crime writing. He examines Pitera's psyche with forensic scrutiny but stops short of glamorising his subject. Grisly and gruesome, Scorcese should definitely buy up the movie rights" News of the World "Engrossing and chilling ... a fast-moving and morbidly fascinating story" Booklist "With brutal honesty, Philip Carlo writes from the heart" -- Robert De Niro on Philip Carlo's work

From the Back Cover

Tommy “Karate” Pitera was not likeother mafiosi. A capo in the notoriousBonanno family—a deadlymartial artist highly skilled with knives andother lethal weapons—Pitera murdered hisway to becoming one of the premier assassinsin the New York mafia during the 1980s.He didn’t just whack people; he diabolicallymade them disappear forever. In hushedwhispers people spoke of Pitera’s secret burialgrounds and the grotesque things he did tohis victim’s bodies. If the Mafia had a JeffreyDahmer, it was surely Tommy Pitera.

Offering the first-ever look at the life andcrimes of Tommy Pitera, New York Timesbestselling author Philip Carlo exposes theman behind some of the most horrific murdersin Mafia history—and tells the story ofthe heroic investigator who brought himdown. Cloaked in the bloody history of LaCosa Nostra, The Butcher is Carlo’s mostfrightening portrayal yet of the depraveddepths within a psychopath’s mind.

Book lacks focus
By Mellow Monk
This book could have been so much better -- considering the gruesomely interesting subject matter -- but instead suffers from two major flaws: lack of focus on Tommy Pitera and the author's cheesy writing style.

The story always seems to be viewing Pitera from afar; too often the author describes what his accomplices did or how they reacted in a situation, but not what Tommy Karate himself said or other details that can bring out what is inside the mind of a remorseless killer like that.

For instance, Pitera's first murder is completely glossed over, but this is way too significant an event for a mere half a paragraph. Was the author just lazy? It's hard to avoid this conclusion when there is also a lot of padding, such as the backstory of informants and ATF agents.

As for the author's style, he almost expends more words describing what a ghoul Pitera is (which he certainty is) than he does describing what Pitera actually did. There are indeed a couple of intense scenes describing a killing and dismembering as they happen, but then Pitera disappears back into the shadows, and we have no idea how he is living or what he's doing while we get detailed descriptions of his accomplices scurrying around in fear (and getting high) and ATF agents maneuvering to collect evidence.

Also, just what did Pitera do for those 2 years he spent in Japan? Couldn't the author find any information about that? What city did he live in? What karate schools did he attend? Two years sounds like more than enough time for an angry miscreant like Pitera to get into at least a little trouble, but all the author gives us are a couple of vague sentences about Tommy immersing himself in the culture of the samurai warrior, etc.

Still, the underlying tale is a darkly intriguing one, and if you want to know more about Tommy Pitera than you can glean from his Wikipedia page, this is the only game in town.

Good riddance to bad rubbish!
By lulubelle
This animal was a scourge of men and women alike. He definitely wasn't firing on all 8 cylinders. The disgusting acts he committed should have definitely merited the death penalty.
I can't even imagine what else he and his criminal associates were guilty of that never made it to trial.
Too bad it took so long and so many resources. The 2 DEA agents did one hell of a job! They lost a part of their life in order to bring a bunch of criminals down. It's nice to know that their intelligence, hard work and effort paid off.

Not Bad
By Ted McKinley
Good book but not one of Carlo's better works. I feel he spent an inordinate time on the cops. Perhaps it's because after reading Ice Man and Gaspipe, I was expecting more emphasis the criminal aspect. Or maybe since I grew up in the inner city in Chicago in the 60's, I was expecting a bit more of the intimate workings of organized crime. I'm not a criminal. Nor am I an idiot. I've seen my share of (alleged) corruption in the rank and file of our local forces. To think that the DEA has operatives as golden and loyal as his star characters is a bit of a stretch.
